Re: Happiness Delusion? Depression Sane? [Re: Phluck]

"A pessimist is just an informed optimist"

I always liked that quote because it seems so true (at least from my perspective). I think depressed people are more 'in tune' with reality because, well, look at this way.

Everybody wants to be happy (i know thats a generalization but bare with me). Depressed people aren't happy, they tend to focus on the negative aspects. However, that doesn't mean they are oblivious to the 'happy' aspects of life, its just harder to internalize. Happy people, on the other hand, are already happy, so why should they pay any attention to the negative in life? These people would have the tendency to be deluded individuals because they simply disregard the depressing things around them. Pardon my french, but if something ain't broke, don't fix it. These people are already happy so what do they care?

Depressed people are directly confronted with the negative in life. Being immersed in that world causes unhappiness which inturn promts said person to analyze what the problem is, and how they can fix it. EDIT: The happiness they can see but have problems internalizing is the motivating factor behind the quest for a solution to that problem.

When you think about it, everything created in this world (by us) is the solution to a certain problem. If it takes a depressed person to be more intune with their environment, to search out the problems and find answers, then how can that be considered a disease? (I'm not saying that all inventors are depressed, just that a depressed person is more capable of searching out problems) I hope that made sense....

Thinking that the world and society is "fucked up" is a judgement that you could only make if you thought that there is a different way that the world is "supposed" to be, which would require some sort of faith.

I don't know how it's suppost to be. But it sure as fuck shouldn't be like this.
