Swami meets Dan Millman
    #1809030 - 08/13/03 11:08 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Note: Dan Millman is the famed author of the classic "Way of the Peaceful Warrior". The Swam went to visit him in 1987 at his home in Mill Valley, CA for a Life Reading. This part of the transcript is from a cassette tape and concerns reincarnation.

Dan: Swam, do you believe in reincarnation?

Swam: Well, I had a dream once that seemed to give the idea credence...

Dan: I am not going to review your most recent life, but the one that has the greatest impact on you today.

Swam: OK.

Dan: Swam, do you have a powerful connection to Japan or things Japanese?

Swam: I have been to Japan, but have no particular interest in their history.

Dan: Have you read or seen Shogun?

Swam: Saw the mini-series.

Dan: Did it have any fascination for you?

Swam: Only as a well-acted and scripted melodrama.

Dan: Well, I must tell you that you were a powerful samurai, a Bushido, in feudal Japan. Your samurai warriors swore total loyalty and vowed to give their lives for you.

Swam: *interrupting* Come on, Dan!

Dan: What?

Swam: Why is it that in a past-life reading? EVERYONE was always someone famous; a king, a queen, a leader, a great inventor. 99% of the world's population were nobodies who made little impact on world events. Yet, to pump up the readee's ego, you guys always make the previous incarnation to be an important historical figure.

Dan: (emphatic) NO! I do readings all the time about bakers and farmers, but YOU!, You have NOT been average for a long, long time. *Pauses* You were a governor of a large territory and somewhat of a despot. No one dared to question your judgement or authority. You had the power of life or death over those in your fiefdom. If you wanted someone dead *snaps fingers*, he was killed like that with no debate. You were ruthless with enemies, yet tried to be fair and do what you considered right. Your area thrived under your rule. Women were nothing to you; merely objects to sate your physical desires. You could have whomever you wanted; yet you never had a real love interest. You were a man of great wealth and appreciated objects of high craftsmenship.

Dan: As you grew older you had a great many scars. Not only on your body, but also on your heart. You wondered what would befall you after death. Yes, you did all the proper rituals to the gods of your day, but you had no real sense of religion or spirit. Despite all your great successes you felt a great sadness on your deathbed; as if you had missed out on some great truth.

Swam: All this is fine, but what does it have to do with me today?

Dan: Money and success will not come easy to you in this life until you realize that they are only tools and not ends unto themselves. Late in life you will be quite wealthy and become a philanthropist.

Dan: Because of your total disrespect for women in that life, you will dream of love, but it will elude you until you are able to meet women on an equal footing. Most of your relationships will be head-butting contests. When the anger and fight in you have dissipated, then you will be married - and it will be for life; for you are fiercely loyal to your friends as you will be to your mate.

Note to readers: I have never shared this with anybody and will refuse to answer any personal questions about my life today.

Very interesting, man.

So, what do you think about what he said? You don't have to reveal anything at all, but any thoughts on it? I like the part about the head butting duels, reminds me of something...
Peace.

Don't get me wrong, I have complete respect for you, but in my opinion it seems as though through your posts, whether its on purpose or not you try and feed your ego in such a way that its not noticable. Like the pretenda-shaman who claims to be completely humble, so people will respect him.

"....and become a philanthropist."

How does THAT ring in your ears?  Would you be in agreance with that...  or do you think its never going to happen?

You sound like a very good candidate.

[ Please excuse the "shrink" talk ]...  How does that make you feel?  Re- walking down that particular path, that is...

Swami isnt a bad guy. Not at all. He himself is much different than he makes himself appear to be, that much is obvious. I often feel Swami is learning more on these boards , and the way in which he learns is how he chooses to post. He learns from the comments and replies of others.

He does have a noticeable ego, and I've seen it up against myself, and others as well. I also have a very big ego, which I try to keep well-hidden on these boards.

Swami, just like all of us has a great deal of inner turmoil, and from his postings, the stillness and emotional devoid of many of them, its quite obvious the turmoil that exists.

I'm by no means a physic reader, I just use my intelligence and abilities to easily pick up on people's habits and thinking patterns and break it down in order to see them better.

Ummm... That's interesting.

I can't picture you sitting down and letting some guy talk to you about your "past life." It seems to me that a lot of the things Dan said could be true for many people.

What are your feelings on this conversation you had?

No wonder you don't believe in anything...you set yourself up for disapointment!

...or have you been having bushido dreams?

How true was the reading?

i think that's the tactic used by many of these so called "new age" practioners, no matter what their particular medium is for bestowing their pseudo esoteric knowledge on the masses......pure and total VAGUENESS, nebulous predictions and interpretations that could in fact apply to anyone....

> EVERYONE was always someone famous; a king, a queen, a leader, a great inventor.

As I was reading your transcript I was thinking the exact same thing.

> I do readings all the time about bakers and farmers

Do you believe him on this one? Every last person that I have ever talked with that has had some kind of past life reading has been told that they were somebody important or famous. I have never once heard anybody talk about their past life as a trashman or bean collector.

Exactly! Who wants to be considered plain or ordinary? When you pay good money, you want to hear a good yarn.

Dan: Swami, you were a dull-witted slave who no one cared about, worked hard then died of small pox at age 32...

Dan referred to you as "Swam"?
I notice you now refer to yourself as "The Swam".
If you have a past-life reading in your next life and this one comes up, you probably won't believe it.

It is not surprising that past-life readers tend to bring out famous lives. He probably thought you were there to feed your ego so he gave you what he thought you wanted.

Many/most past lives are of humble origins, a simple housewife in Siberia, a peasant in feudal Europe, etc. I notice you didn't wait for him to give you your other lives, you just immediately busted out with your pre-formed opinion based upon the first one he gave you.

So much for open-minded inquiry.

Well he did say "Dan: I am not going to review your most recent life, but the one that has the greatest impact on you today."

So start practicin your bushido...
I get so sick when i hear of these kinds of readings..they ask you a question then determine the next one based on that answer.  Each question is a guess, and if its not right they'll ask another until you agree then they go off on that!

Dan referred to you as "Swam"?
No, he used my birth name. I was not to become the Swami for another few years.

Many/most past lives are of humble origins, a simple housewife in Siberia, a peasant in feudal Europe, etc.
If reincarnation exists, they would have to be, now wouldn't they? However; who here has had a past-life READING, in which they were ordinary?

I notice you didn't wait for him to give you your other lives, you just immediately busted out with your pre-formed opinion based upon the first one he gave you.
He only gave one life reading and this was but a small part of an hour transcription covering many topics.

So much for open-minded inquiry.
I spent the time and money to check it out, nes pas?

I don't know shit about life readings, but he did say he was giving you the one most profound on your life today.. the most profound one is going to have to be profound...

Do you care to tell any thoughts on what you think about it all? I don't want details on your life, but I'd love to hear if you find what he is talking about true in your life, and that sort of thing. Come on, man, open up...
Peace.
