Lots of followers of this religion just only eat fruits/vegetables/nuts that won't kill the plant when you remove them from the plant itself. Just no rooted vegetables.

they also get a lot of dairy in their diets so it's not just fruits and nuts,
the dairy provides them many of the proteins they need to stay in reasonable
health

i'm not vegan, but i choose to eat a vegan diet most of the week. for me a balanced vegan diet is chili sin carne. i love fungi, and who cares what the vegans think. some fruitarians won't even eat seeds because it has a spark of life. do they eat mushroom spores? i can respect that ideal, but it isn't practical for me. i work hard and assimilate nutrients poorly. a sugar pine tree would out compete all of it's neighbors and itself if all of it's seeds were to grow. they're meant for the birds, squirrels, bears, and fungi who create the soil for the trees to grow, and provide a survival mechanism at the same time.

OMG!!!  Another morally superior hipster!  Those poor (tasty) animals!  Oh the suffering!  Go watch an episode of Wild Kingdom and have an all-beef hotdog instead of being a prize jackass.

You're probably just trolling (shittily), but, just in case:

Yeah, I suppose I would say I'm morally superior to someone like you. If I found a random cat on the street and decided to torture it to death, most people would find that repulsive. I guess you don't? The amount of pain we put our food through is completely unnecessary when one clean cut to the neck would do just fine. Go microwave a hamster if that's what it takes to get you off.

I'm not against all eating of meat, it's just that the way we produce it is completely fucked up. For example: chickens are crammed into tiny cages (crowded to the point where some of them grow up with broken legs), debeaked (without anesthetic) so they don't peck each other to death, and then killed by automated machines designed to slice their throats. Sometimes it only nicks them, so some of them get boiled alive when they get put into vats for de-feathering. Yes, these type of descriptions rely heavily on shock value for effectiveness, but that doesn't mean they're not true. If you're eating meat from one of these kinds of slaughterhouses, you're effectively in denial or you wouldn't be able to enjoy it. There really isn't any argument you can actually employ to rationalize it, which is probably why you went straight for name-calling.

If you want meat, buy a free-range chicken that gets beheaded in about a second, and therefore dies with a minimum of pain. You can't see the difference? It's odd that there are these kind of replies on a website dedicated to the psychedelic experience, which tends to reinforce the idea that life deserves respect.

I think that every person who eats meat should have to kill animals themselves on a regular basis.  The meat industry creates a disconnect from the source of the meat.

Hunters at least know exactly what they are doing and generally have a greater respect for animals and the cycle of nature. .

Knowing how to harvest, grow and eat vegetables, nuts, and grains is also imporant.

im convinced that humans evolved eating mostly vegetables.

I'm cool with this idea.  I'd still be enjoying my meat and all the pussy ass hipsters that can't cut the head off a chicken or gut a deer could keep eating their falafel burgers.  I have no problems killing animals and was brought up fishing and hunting from a young age.  I agree that the modern disconnect from the source of meat is a huge detriment to our society, in that people eat way too much meat and it is produced in an unhealthy and unethical manner.  But I think that the rise in veganism and vegetarianism in the 1st world is not actually an evolution in morality, but a result of the disconnect between us and our food supply and a reaction against the cruelty of mass-produced meat.
In agrarian societies where there isn't a religious taboo against meat and people are connected to the animals, nobody has an ethical problem occasionally eating meat.  There are no hipster teens going vegan because they've been connected to the farm and have been helping with the entire process of animal husbandry from a young age.  Meat in those societies is scarce because animals are costly and valuable, and when they are slaughtered it is with respect and love and thanking the animal for its sacrifice.
I had militant veganism shoved on me at 8 years old when my mother re-married and it felt like shit.  I was always starving and the food just didn't sit well with me.  Having meat in my diet feels good to my body and feels right, if I hadn't evolved to eat meat it wouldn't taste so good and it wouldn't make me feel healthy and satisfied.  Heavily processed wheat products are far more unnatural and they actually do make me feel ill sometimes.  I'm all about the caveman diet, fruits, vegtables, foraged mushrooms, simple whole grains like rice and a reasonable, small amount of meat and dairy.  I try to source all of my meat and dairy from farmer's cooperatives and make sure that it's free range, drug free and otherwise fed a healthy, natural diet and treated humanely while it lives its life.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, in my mind, we all exist today in part because our ancestors have been eating animals for tens if not hundreds of thousands of years.
If we weren't evolved to have at least some meat in our diet, we simply wouldn't be able to digest it and it would make us sick.  I agree that we're not meant to eat as much as most Americans do, that's why so many of them are morbidly obese.  But try eating nothing but grass for a week and tell me how that goes.  We are not meant for the same diet as Gorillas, cows or other obligate vegetarians.  We are natural omnivores, whether you want to participate in that or not is a lifestyle choice.

Just eat animals you don't like.  Chickens for example are assholes, so are penguins and hippos.  I'd eat the shit out of a hippo, and pigs are assholes too (at least wild pigs) so fuck them as well.  Any animal that would kill me is worth eating.  I also eat cattle because a bull would kill and then rape me if it had the chance.  Its every species for themselves, I only feel kind of bad eating turtle eggs cause turtles are cool.

Pure meat is not bad for you its all the antibiotics, msg, and preservatives that people introduce into their meat that makes it bad....look for more "organic types" of meat.

I don't get why most of the people try to project their believs on others, like "meat eating is right", or wrong...

I'm vegan myself because it hurts myself to see animals getting killed or tortured.
Doing supplements is better for my psychic and physical well being than feeling like shit.

If it was about survival i'd even eat human flesh or animals.

I never really liked meat or dairy products my entire life.

It's a personal decision, you can't really judge someone for being vegan, meat eater, whatever, just for their reason.
if you eat meat, because "you can", then you should chop off your own dick, because you can.

Its more like a philosophy or art i think.

You can really get 95% of the food you need from vegetables if you have a knowledge of botany and cooking.

If you look at other apes and mammals similar to us many of them eat mostly vegetables.

look how buff cows and horses are and they eat mostly grass and grain.

For the past 4 years I have been switching between being vegan and vegetarian.
But recently I have been getting alot of flack from my friends about me being a vegatarian, they keep telling me that it is unnatural, unmoral, and unhealthy.
For the longest time I would not even listen to them, but recently I have been trying to be more open minded about the issue.
A little earlier today my friend sent my a video that has really changed the way I think about eating vegetables and fruit.
I'm going to have to second guess myself next time I reach for an apple.
:feelsbadman:

Anyways, here's the video.

FUCK your friends. If they are truly your friends then you should tell them to shut the fuck up and leave you alone about it.

Animal meat is an essential source of protein, but the fact is we don't need as much protein as many meat eaters like to claim. That being said, if you don't eat about 50g of protein from beans, soy, or nuts everyday then your diet is really lacking a crucial element.

Meat is about 1/5 of my diet. Meat should be there to flavor a dish or a snack or what have you. It's not suppose to be the primary thing on the plate and should't ever be more than 1/3 of the plate.

Don't change your values because your friends are being assholes about what your eating.
