Cats and dogs are predators and as such they need animal protein in their diets.

The point of being a vegetarian is to reduce your usage of animal products as much as you can. It's almost impossible to completely remove yourself from any use of dead animals. By the way, I'm not a vegetarian.

I just give my cats regular dry cat food. Cats are carnivores so it's not their fault, humans on the other hand are omnivores so we have a choice. I choose to live a meat free life... for myself.

All is a miracle.” -Thich Nhat Hanh

Meat all the way. Vegetables are boring. And there's no blood when you shoot them.

I admit I eat meat, love the taste, but hate what I am doing. One day I will have the willpower to elimate it from my life. But my dog's and cat's didn't make that choice and wouldn't eat vegetables. I would continue to feed my animals as I do. But like I said, as of now I eat the shit out of meat.

I don't know what goes into my cats food since I don't make it. But after years of trying different foods we finally found one that keeps them healthy and happy. Unfortunately you have to have a perscription to buy it, but I love my cats and they are worth it. And its still cheaper then feeding them fresh meats (which would probably be ideal).
As for myself, I am definately an omnivore in every sense of the word. I'll eat anything you put in front of me, and I'll enjoy about 99.9% of it.

Yeah, there's a big raw foods movement for cats. But it's tedious to make your own catfood. I think it mostly involves boneless chicken and some sort of bone meal... Oh here yah go:
Quote:
A good raw food diet is made up of about 75-80% meat, 20-25% veggies, perhaps some grains such as oatmeal, millet, or barley, and supplements such as bone meal. The idea is to create the kind of food your cat would eat if he was hunting for his meals -- birds, mice and other small rodents, maybe some grass. If your cat doesn't hunt, and you're not up to the idea of buying mice for her, chicken, beef, turkey, lamb and quail are good substitutes The bone meal is crucial in the recipe to ensure the right balance of vitamins and minerals in meat and bone.

i'm a vegetarian, but my cats are on a meat only diet. they get dried food, but it's grain free as cats are carnivors and cannot properly digest carbohydrates. my horses are vegetarian though... they love their grass. and my degus get a mix of guinea pig/chinchilla food. i have no idea whats in those pellets, but most likely some bone or blood meal or something of the sort.

Veggie here, but my cat & dog's food have the normal assortment of animal products in there. Like learyfan pointed out, the aim is to reduce ones involvement in the process more than to seek austere avoidance of anything that came from a cow, which would be impossible and a waste of energy.
Maybe I'm just buying into propaganda and haven't bothered to research it myself, but it's my understanding that our pets can't produce complete proteins from vegetable sources like we can, so it seems borderline cruel.
