Please explain how the killing and eating of meat bearing animals raised for that very purpose is unethical and immoral.
Please explain how involving one's offspring in a quest to decide the most compassionate method to render a chicken lifeless is unethical, immoral, and manipulative. For all you know the vegan choice for sexybutsparkly is a relative new venture. Likely she was raised on those same chickens most of her young life.
Please explain how not killing/eating chickens (meat) endows one with superior empathy - or is is simply a self-smug attitude of moral superiority for being a vegan?
I am not being smug. That is your projection. I've eaten meat since quitting veganism when I was 21 - 38 years ago. I only recently (6 months as of yesterday) stopped eating animals or their products. It is a dietary experiment. I am motivated by my physical health, not by empathy and compassion. So your attack on my moral superiority is groundless. I aspire to higher levels of empathy and compassion, which are, according to Buddhism and some other frameworks, clearly the moral high ground. The immorality I mentioned refers to the manipulative parent. Perhaps you are closer in age to being someone's child than to being someone's parent (or grandparent, as in my case), and do not see the parent's behavior as I do. As a counselor for children, I have had to deal with Haitian immigrants who could not shed their programming, and instead of going to a nearby supermarket, forced their children to kill pigs in the most cruel ways, hacking at a screaming, terrified animal as it ran around with a leg hacked off. If there is no need to butcher an animal, and if you have no clue as to do so humanely, then it is immoral to cause such suffering by setting your child to the task. People I know who have raised chickens, sometimes initially for food, became aware of their chickens' own awareness and even affection. Subsequently, the awareness of the sentience of those chickens was sufficient to change those peoples' minds about killing and eating their chickens - or any chickens in fact.
I didn't actually notice that the OP's parent requested anything. Rather, the OP being vegan, set upon the task of finding the most humane way to kill the chicken because the mother was going to kill it. Regardless, that's not why I'm posting, but rather to share a link to the most recent episode of This American Life on Animal Sacrifice
http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/480/animal-sacrifice
It approaches a variety of topics, including why Jews no longer sacrifice animals, a Portland woman who teaches courses on how to raise and slaughter animals for personal consumption, and stories from people who donated their dogs to serve in the military during WW2... It's well worth a listen if any of you have the time.
-------------------- Everything is better than it was the last time. I'm good.
If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.
It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.
I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.
