The original purpose of lsd was to help learning, thought, and cure depression and psychosis which sparked a research wave into all psychedelics. it only lasted about 30 years in which time no conclusive data was found, but there was very convincing evidence showing that psychedelics such as lsd/acid and psylocibin and its cousins are some of the safest drugs to use apart from cannabis which was also looked into for its not so well known psychedelic properties.

In the short term personally psychedelics help with my psychosis, but in the long term I am not so sure. The evidence seems to suggest otherwise in most cases, although not all studies have shown a correlation between drugs and psychosis. In general though, if drugs do worsen psychosis, more or less all of them do, especially the ones that affect the dopaminergic system the most. Also, certain cannabinoid receptor sites that are activated during marihuana use are involved in schizophrenia (the extreme of psychosis). I've also heard the NMDA receptors active when dissociatives are used play a major role in psychosis. During periods of methoxetamine abuse I did note a few profound psychosis relapses. Even if all of this is true, it seems that most of the negative and positive symptoms of psychosis attributed to drugs go away mostly, if not completely, after abuse is stopped. And if anyone is predisposed to psychosis, I especially advise them to stay the fuck away from stimulants (methamphetamine the most). Trust me, out of all the drugs, amphetamines cause the worse relapses drugs for me. And it is interesting that they started doing this only after around the age of 18-19 when it has been proposed to be approximately when psychosis peaks or becomes obvious. I started abusing drugs much earlier and more or less all of them, so I guess I'm one of those people where it didn't affect the onset time significantly.

Other than that psychedelics do seem to be the least or among the least harmless drugs, but if someone is predisposed to psychosis I urge them to stop doing drugs completely before the cravings get worse. Luckily psychosis disorder has pretty consistently occurred in only 0.4- 1% of the population. From personal experience, it only led me deeper and deeper into hell, but hell that just might be me. :satansmoking:

As far as learning and thought go, all I can say is that psychedelics made me more interested in philosophy and mysticism, which is in the end knowledge. Of course it also made me skeptical of education (science) to the point of considering it brainwash. Not something you'd want to believe even if education sucks due to sociopolitical and economic reasons. Without science philosophy and mysticism made me a crazy conspiracy theorist spewing mystical mumbo- jumbo. Realizing this made me aggressive in my intake of knowledge, which led me to love knowledge of philosophy, art and science. However, the addiction and worsened mental health accompanying drugs still make it hard for me to be motivated at learning, even if the love is there.

I've personally used psychoactives and psychedelics to treat a host of mental illnesses. the thing is while some people just keep doing them, if done at the peak of when symptoms of these things occur, ex, depression, after  getting in the right mindset, if you use them to do a little self searching, it can stall the symptoms for several days. DMT cured my depression.

I believe you. It's just that psychosis is a whole other story and I feel more inclined to dis-encourage people prone to it to use psychedelics or at least use it very rarely.

The research by MAPS is curious and may have significance. The human brain and physiology is so complex, that we are far from any conclusive proof or understanding yet.

So maybe a cautious yet inquisitive approach is the best road we have to travel at the moment.

I live a reality that some might call psychotic.
I believe in my experience and what I have learned.
I also believe there is trickery and misdirection at every turn.

Last night, for the first time in three years, I ate maybe 6 or 7 medium to large azurescens that I collected from the oregon coast.  So refreshed this morning.  Its been a long time.

I can definitely see how psilocybin can be healing and could be of benefit.  But also that this kind of therapy might only be handled well by certain individuals and that others would have a really bad time and perhaps lasting effects and a worse outlook afterwards.

Good medicine.  But can be punishment and torture.  For someone suffering a terrifying psychosis this could go either way.

I can see why someone would perceive benefits when their serotonin and other mood enhancing chemicals are stimulated. Maybe there is profound social and personal effects, but it would be deceptive to someone under the influence.

Unless you had a team of scientists and psychologists rating your performance its all anecdotal.

But from me to me, when I feel better and feel loved and 'good' vibes/good energy that is what matters for the time being and takes precedent.  I'm not looking to prove to anyone measurable changes in behavior or mood or function or ability.  That all has its place.  Its the shift in energy that I see as the potential for healing.  An subtle energy that might not even be included in the modern consensus worldview.  The change from baseline to euphoria that is real energy/vibration has a nurturing feel to it for me, and could be healthy inherently.  Its a refreshing delicate form of energy that is stimulating.  Just to sink into it was heaven.  Dense orange.  Blue and purple.:mushroom2:

This is your perception which under chemicals which influence mood. Its subjective and needs critical evaluation over long and short term effects.

No not really.  If I was claiming fact and exclaiming Truth...  Maybe.  But why?

I don't think it's just down to mood enhancing chemicals tbh.  When I was having trouble with OCD, in the form of uncontrollable obsessive thoughts LSD completely got rid of the whole condition as soon as I started to come up.  In fact I knew I was coming up because all of a sudden I was in complete control of my thoughts, like someone had flicked a switch.  I know OCD is not a psychotic illness but there is a relationship between schizophrenia and OCD, and some of the symptoms also overlap.

I'm pretty sure there is research being done on this.

New studies are currently underway that examine psilocybin's role in battling addiction and smoking cessation, and they seem promising.
However, Paul Kenny from the Scripps Research Institute in Florida does sign a word of caution. "Psilocybin is unlikely to be used to treat addiction. As with other hallucinogenic drugs it can have worrying side-effects such as psychological distress or even psychosis," he told TIME magazine.
Researchers hope instead that they can harness the powers of psilocybin in a drug that has none of mushrooms' hallucinogenic effects.
