Have they done experiments with magic mushrooms to see if they CURE psychosis?
    #17327724 -

I was RECOVERING from psychosis and used them yesterday, and now feel as if I had never been psychotic to begin with as in I have returned to a state where I can actually enjoy people and my surroundings and I feel much more in tune with so-called normalcy.

It was getting to be a pretty ugly time for me (the past month). I was forgetting the time, lashing out, and generally being seen as a pest. Now I feel a LOT smarter and less irrational. This was my second trip. I don't even know the species of mushroom, I just picked a random mushroom while my dad and I were walking around the neighborhood while he wasn't looking. I am religious though, so I prayed to God first to ask if I would die if I ate it. I just used my coffee machine and poured in hot water and then strained and ate. It was no bigger than my thumb though and lasted 8 hr. :ooo:

As far as I know shrooms will never cure psychosis, but might temporarily take away some of the negative and positive symptoms. On the other hand there is more literature on how shrooms might bring out psychosis in an individual at an earlier age and even worsen some of the symptoms, if that individual is already genetically predisposed to psychosis though.

I'm assuming this is a troll, but yes various projects were done treating people with various mental illnesses with psychedelics, generally to relatively little avail. The term psychotomimetic was still commonly used during this time- the notion was that psychedelics simulated mentally ill states of mind and may therefore be useful in curing them. Like I said, frankly it didn't work. Rare positive results, but generally nothing other than an enormously decreased sensitivity to the drugs compared with "normal" subjects.

A large dose of LSD helped me recover from a state of psychosis/neurosis (I knew who and where I was, had constant, very powerful hallucinations but knew they weren't real, not sure where on the spectrum this would technically lie), but I suspect that had a lot more to do with emotional healing and confidence boosting than the drug acting as any kind of chemical cure to my problem. I'd note that my problem was also triggered by psychedelics, so whether you'd get any benefit from tripping with respect to a naturally occurring psychosis, I don't know. If anything, I'd say at the right time in your life and recovery, it can help but definitely is not something to be widely advocated.

In my experience, almost everyone I've known to be on edge, in one way or another, let alone possessing diagnosis-worthy mental problems, is far more likely to be left scarred than healed by psychedelics.

I've actually read a fair few anecdotal reports of schizophrenics who have taken mushrooms and seen a vast improvement in their symptoms.  The same with other mental illnesses.  I had a brief bout of Pure O a while back (not the same as psychosis I know) and mushrooms helped me get a real handle on it and why it was happening and thus get rid of it.  Edit: Mushrooms helped me understand it, and acid actually completely got rid of it temporarily.

I know the general stance is that the opposite is more likely to happen with psychosis, but I think people are too quick to look to psychedelics. Maybe in very large doses, but tbh I think high grade weed is the biggest contributor to psychotic illness, and how many people smoke when they are tripping?  I know one person who has paranoid schizophrenia from smoking weed (he, in his 20s, has to permanently sleep in his parents' bedroom because he think there are people living in the roof trying to get him when he sleeps), and one of my best friends had a full on psychotic episode a few weeks ago and ended up in hospital from some edibles (she has taken mushrooms and cactus before with no problems).  I don't know a single person who has ever had a psychotic episode from psychedelics.

Having said that, it is of course risky and you have to get the dose right, but I believe you OP, I think it is very possible, but I highly doubt it's something they will ever study again because of the risks involved.

Lol, I didn't read this bit first time round.

"I don't even know the species of mushroom, I just picked a random mushroom while my dad and I were walking around the neighborhood while he wasn't looking."

Definite troll.

But either way, there is evidence to suggest it can help in some cases, but I wouldn't recommend it.

It's not a troll, and I'm still doing better. It wasn't a full on trip with visuals, but it was "trippy" in the sense that I was experiencing music in a whole new way and the colors were enhanced for an hour or so. The psychosis that I had was originated from me taking an anti-depressant (Wellbutrin) which approximately 5% have a negative reaction to (I was tripping harder than on any other drug and had to go to the hospital). So it's not like I have a genetic predisposition towards psychosis because I was alleviated by the antipsychotic pills where people who develop it naturally would have some trouble with this.

What is this, /r/trolls?

I understand why you would say that. It (the state of being while on pharmacological medications) wasn't very smart. Now it doesn't matter. Most people who have psychosis should not do what I did. I QUIT, no more mushies.

The original purpose of lsd was to help learning, thought, and cure depression and psychosis which sparked a research wave into all psychedelics. it only lasted about 30 years in which time no conclusive data was found, but there was very convincing evidence showing that psychedelics such as lsd/acid and psylocibin and its cousins are some of the safest drugs to use apart from cannabis which was also looked into for its not so well known psychedelic properties.

In the short term personally psychedelics help with my psychosis, but in the long term I am not so sure. The evidence seems to suggest otherwise in most cases, although not all studies have shown a correlation between drugs and psychosis. In general though, if drugs do worsen psychosis, more or less all of them do, especially the ones that affect the dopaminergic system the most. Also, certain cannabinoid receptor sites that are activated during marihuana use are involved in schizophrenia (the extreme of psychosis). I've also heard the NMDA receptors active when dissociatives are used play a major role in psychosis. During periods of methoxetamine abuse I did note a few profound psychosis relapses. Even if all of this is true, it seems that most of the negative and positive symptoms of psychosis attributed to drugs go away mostly, if not completely, after abuse is stopped. And if anyone is predisposed to psychosis, I especially advise them to stay the fuck away from stimulants (methamphetamine the most). Trust me, out of all the drugs, amphetamines cause the worse relapses drugs for me. And it is interesting that they started doing this only after around the age of 18-19 when it has been proposed to be approximately when psychosis peaks or becomes obvious. I started abusing drugs much earlier and more or less all of them, so I guess I'm one of those people where it didn't affect the onset time significantly.

Other than that psychedelics do seem to be the least or among the least harmless drugs, but if someone is predisposed to psychosis I urge them to stop doing drugs completely before the cravings get worse. Luckily psychosis disorder has pretty consistently occurred in only 0.4- 1% of the population. From personal experience, it only led me deeper and deeper into hell, but hell that just might be me. :satansmoking:

As far as learning and thought go, all I can say is that psychedelics made me more interested in philosophy and mysticism, which is in the end knowledge. Of course it also made me skeptical of education (science) to the point of considering it brainwash. Not something you'd want to believe even if education sucks due to sociopolitical and economic reasons. Without science philosophy and mysticism made me a crazy conspiracy theorist spewing mystical mumbo- jumbo. Realizing this made me aggressive in my intake of knowledge, which led me to love knowledge of philosophy, art and science. However, the addiction and worsened mental health accompanying drugs still make it hard for me to be motivated at learning, even if the love is there.
