Spicy-Food Induced Altered State of Consciousness
    #15097918 -

Has anyone else ever had an altered state of consciousness as a result from eating spicy food?

Once I was eating chicken wings at Quaker Steak & Lube (a chicken wing franchise in the mid-west US) and I ordered the Atomic wings which are registered at 150,000 scoville heat units. I have a pretty high affinity for spicy food but even these were hard to put down. Just smelling the wings made your nose and lungs burn and irritate. I ate three in a row as best I could, fighting back the tears and intensity. After about a minute I felt tingly all over as though my limbs were all beginning to fall asleep. It slowly wrapped me like a blanket, giving me a distinctive 'high' that was not dissimilar to an opiate rush. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience.

As far as why this happens, my only guess is that since spiciness is registered by taste buds as a reaction to pain (release of substance P in the brain) and I believe that the body will try to counter-act this by possibly dumping large amounts of endorphins, thus causing this opiate-like sensation.

Does anyone have any input or has anything similar happened to anyone else before?

Could have been endorphines, your body was in so much pain it probably just dumped a shitload of endorphines into you thinking you were seriously hurt.

I wanted the worst possible pain that can be achieved without injury. I was not disappointed.

It wasn't a self harm/masochist kind of thing, I wanted to experience pain in its purest form, a great challenge and confromt and overcome my most basic biological fears. Meditation/personal growth, a rather painful way to celebrate life.

What it feels like?  At first you are overcome with fear and regret. Then you are preoccupied with the process of suffering. The feeling of your ass having been ripped open with red hot hooks and feeling like you are bleeding profusely, the actual torn open wound feeling. After about 20 minutes an endorphin rush builds giving you quite strong sedation, euphoria and a sense of detachment that sends your mind wanderinmg awau from the painful stimulus. at 30 minutes in the pain markedly decreases and a numbness starts to take hold as all your local pain neurotransmitters are becoming depleted. At about 40 minutes in, pain is as good as over and you are high on endorphins and adrenalin, with a strong sense of having been through an ordeal best avoided.

It takes some months for it to fade enough for curiosity to take over again.

I have been experimenting with pain a bit...but that is the next level shit.

It must be incredibly intense.  I wiped my ass with one of those germ killer wipes once and it burned for five minutes and that was intense. LOL

Either way, didn't know WS was such a badass.

^^^ Hahahaha fuck, that's insane!!

I once watched some dudes on YouTube eat some of the spiciest chillis they had grown and after about 15 minutes they were speaking incoherently, pretty much as if they were completely fried. After a little longer, it definitely seemed like they were high!

chillis help release endorphins... i love it. Thats the secret reason many people love spicy food. After a minute of burning, and having fluids pour out of your nose, you start to float

Yep, every day.  Just for dinner, recently.  Only lasts about 5-10 minutes for me, but I guess if I had more space in my stomach to eat more food, I could keep it going longer.

Wow I will definitely have to try that in the future. I experimented with the idea of using naloxone for a similar effect but I am unsure to what extent that would work.

I remember feeling hesitant to drive home after eating those wings because I was so disoriented.

I thought about trying it when I first read it but in the end I didn't think it sounded worth it. Bear respect to WS though. :satansmoking:

What are your guys favorite type of hot pepper? I've only had chili peppers, habanero, and jalapeno peppers before... habaneros are very hot!

I was looking for that. I wasn't able to find it under search. I'm still not sure I'm ever going to try that though.

I love Bhut Jolokia, also known as the ghost chili. It used to be the worlds hottest pepper but has since been replaced by a few. Its flavor is so strong you can use just a few flakes of a dried pepper so season a whole meal adequately.
It's flavor is very smokey, similar to a habanero, and is almost reminiscent of bacon.
Personally, I like to simmer a finely chopped ghost chili in a frying pan of extra virgin olive oil to use as I please in several meals.
I find that garlic, lemon juice, and a chopped serano tossed with this oil on chicken wings is divine.

My favorite is definitely the Scotch Bonnet.  It has this amazing sweet flavor that really helps brighten up savory dishes.  And it's got a fair bit of heat.

definitely.  i have a friend who grows dozens of varieties of the hottest peppers around.  recently we had a chili pepper testing party and the stars of the show were the ghost chili aka Bhut Jolokia (formerly the hottest chili in the world), and the trinidad scorpion (currently the hottest chili pepper champ, as far as i know at the moment).

we only ate tiny slices of these things. maybe 1/8" wide by 1/4" long.  these things are so fucking strong.  the weird thing is, when you get up to such high concentrations of scoville units that these peppers possess, it's not even really a hot, burning sensation anymore.  its more of a general, stinging, insanely intense pain than a hot feeling.

but anyway, we eat a small piece of each of the dozen or so super hot varieties of chilis one at a time. then we let the effects set in and pass, write down our results and comments, and wait until we're not burning anymore to try the next pepper.

the ghost chili and the trinidad scorpion were both so intense that it induced a very altered state of awareness.  the pain was horribly intense, and again it isn't so much of a burning pain as it is a stinging pain.  but its so strong and it lasts so long that i guess the combination of the crazy intense pain and the endorphins released result in a really intense high.

and I'm a former opiate addict, so it takes A LOT of endorphins to do anything at all to me. but these two peppers gave me a huge rush, along with the huge rush of pain.  it sucks and its awesome at the same time.  hard to explain.  but if you can handle 20-30 minutes of intense pain on the inside of your mouth, your tongue and your lips, its something worth trying because its a really unique and enjoyable experience.. aside from the pain.

it must be a combination of endorphins, adrenaline and the pure intensity and concentration of the pain that gives me a huge rush that lasts as long as the pain is at its peak.  my heart pounds yet I'm sort of calm and relaxed (aside from breathing heavily and spitting out excess salivation), it feels a long lasting stimulant rush combined with and evened out by a heavy endorphin rush.  crazy.  i want to do it again for sure, but it hurts.  it hurts bad.
