I am not married and I have never been, but I give you my opinion.

Marriage is a statement that one is willing to take the risk of being tied with someone until death parts them. But of course, as we know, there is divorce, which makes marriage pretty much pointless, except that money and property are officially shared.

I recently married and so far so good. We are very happy together, love and help and support each other, and our financial situation is much more secure and abundant than if we were on our own. The key in my opinnion to a good financial future is Dual Income No Kids, assuming you are married to the right person.

That said, I was living with my wife for four years before we got married, every bit as happy and in love. So in that sense, marriage changed absolutely nothing, and was in that sense 'pointless'.

However, the adventure or traveling to another country with our closest friends and having a wonderful vacation wedding on a beach, the pure experience of the ceremony, the celebration dinner, the kind words and good wishes of friends, the generous wedding showers and wedding gifts, and the respect and good will of other old schoolers who are married has all made it very worthwhile.

But I always keep it honest. If things stop working out, we will get divorced. I do not believe in "till death do us part". Keeping a marriage together after the love has gone, or if there is abuse or infidelity or other harmful patterns, does FAR more harm than good (I know from watching my parents destroy each others lives through a 35 year marriage and a long ongoing divorce).
