Heaven is a possibility

I hear people say this:

"I don't know if heaven exists, but it is a possibility and I can't rule it out."

But is it a possiblity?  How do you know its a possiblity?  Things might just be such that heaven is NOT a possibility.  In which case, if you say that it is one, in ignorance or not, you would be telling a lie.

Do you know if heaven is a possibility?  You don't, do you?

So is heaven a possibility?  Well, is it possible it is a possibility?  Possibly, but maybe not. 


It seems, the best we can do to make sure we don't lie about the possibility of heaven is to say "I don't know if heaven exists."  Because if we say that, we would be speaking the truth.  If we say "Heaven is possible"  We might be lying and not even know, likewise if we say "Heaven is impossible."

So, what can we learn from this?  Possibility-talk needs closer scrutiny. At times we might think things are possible without any justification for thinking so.  Just because we don't know something doesn't mean it is possible OR impossible.

Good question, how can you?

I would say, in all cases where we are talking about either, we actually don't know whether or not it is possible or impossible.  Possibility is a useful concept, for certain goals one might have, but I don't think we learn anything from it.  When it comes down to it, the possibility of something happening does not affect how likely something is.  Rather, it only is a guess of how likely something is.  The thing that happens or doesn't happen is the final say.

This relates to a few things ive been talking about recently.

Heaven is a possibility. So is hell

when it comes to what ACTIONS you take in life, however, the fact that heaven is possible becomes negligible with regards to how you behave, because it is equally possible that heaven is good or heaven is bad.

One ought not deny the existance of any strange realm. However it is trivial. As are most possibilities.

The idea of an 'after life' is more general and more important than the idea of a heaven or hell. It is less trivial because something done with regards to an afterlife can be seen as regarding all possible afterlife scenarios.

I think the most neutral you can get is by pleading the fif. "I don't know" still leaves a possibility for either heads or tails.

It is just as possible as it is impossible.
Saying something is true doesn't make it true, just as saying something is un-true doesn't make it un-true.
In actuality wither or not someone says something is true or not, does not change fact only perception.

Which leads us to faith, which is something entirely different.

The Schrodinger equation can be interpreted (envisioned?) as a probability function (wave function) describing the probability of an electron moving in four dimensions.

It can give us probability maps in 2 or 3 dimensions for atomic orbitals:





See the dark line in the first picture? I think that line may be a region of zero probability

Anyway the point is, scientists can take a fuzzy picture, clean it up, and turn it into a three dimensional cartoon.

Good is not a simple word. Heaven 'by definition' is God's immediate kingdom, an eternal afterlife with god. It is merely assumed that this is good.
As opposed to hell, an eternal afterlife without god. The catholic church, in their interpretations and depictions, championed the firey pits of the Devil and his croneys, and this meme became a dominant association with the notion of hell.
Now, we can also imagine other 'heavens'; really heaven is just an afterlife scenario and they can all be treated the same.

We can imagine the idea of heaven as being blissful and genuine. Or we can imagine it as in the southpark episode featuring Mormons. Or maybe there are virgins. Depending on how seriously you take one depiction of heaven or another, heaven will be slighly different for you.

The only things are aren't possible are those which are impossible.  As others pointed out possibility is not the same thing as probability.

Nice room for speculations about possibilities of heaven here.
Asi it also is about the 'good' or 'bad' of 'heaven', it's time for me to make an assumption.
Primarily, you will earn what you 'worked for' in afterlife. That's general for everybody. So, primarily, everyone should be happy for what he receives, as it is what he ever wished for, strived for, what he represents in life.
The tricky thing will be, that now it will be a 'solid'. You will not be able to change it so 'easily'.
A big part of your 70% of what you ever perceived in live, your subjective projections on reality, will come true. Unchangeable...

Until you (maybe) will be (re-) born again... :grin:

Now think, for some it will be heaven, for some it will be hell, maybe after some time...

And to topic, yes, a possibility only will become true, if the event will become true mostly in the future, or some other place...sometimes even in the past :smile:
But as long as it not became true, possible and impossible can be evaluated by their premising conditions :laugh:
