thought i'd post a pic of my bodged up dehydrator.for the visual learners.

Quote:
take an unused shotgun type FC push pea-sticks,knitting needles, wooden dowel or somesuch through the holes,to act as 'rafters'. cut quarter inch rigid plastic mesh to size to act as 'floors' for each layer.
cut one large hole in side and attach a computer fan.place in front of radiator, turn on.voila.

could probably fit another couple of "floors" if i needed more drying room.

cheapest dehydrator i could find on e-bay was £40 inc p+p.
save the money and buy a pc instead:smile:

Thanks Zed, I searched on B&Q's website and got zero results.  I'll take a look in store next time I pass by, and check Wilkinson's as well.

How about Tyvek generally?  Is it available under other names in the UK?  Anyone know a good source?

You can get it on ebay. its like 1.50 for a tyvek overall that you can cut up. But maybe you could find it in b&q but might be more expensive

Ordered some off ebay, thanks for the tip.  I've seen painting overalls in B&Q etc, but so far they've never mentioned tyvek.  They were that porous polyester stuff - with the little regularly-spaced holes - which I don't think is the same thing (now, whether it would work or not, different story I guess, not willing to experiment with it yet!)

Just a quick note on the bloodmeal... Id be very careful with it, it is very potent stuff and if your wanting it for a nitrogen boost I suggest you go to MaccyD's and ask for their old coffee grinds instead... (or obviously anywhere that sells fresh ground coffee).

They will be a lot more suited to your needs.

heres what I do. Its cheap, easy, you'll have loads of pots to do your bidding with, plus plenty of nice soup and sauce to go with your pasta.

In sainsburys and probably other supermarkets there are food containters that are plastic tubs with clip-on lids. They're the same as the plastic tubs you can get from micro-science except they don't have filter lids (which we'll get to later) and they don't cost the earth so long as you buy soup and pasta sauce.

basically they look like this:

They come in all shapes and sizes with all sorts of yummy processed foods inside. The big soup ones are the best, especially for grain.

(bare in mind that some packets have labels that will peel off, some do not. Pacino's pasta sauces and sainsburys brand soups are perfect. the label in the picture above won't come off, but that doesn't present too much of a problem)

Now go on ebay and get some polyfil. In the uk it will all be under the name of 'Polyester Filling'. La-de-da!

its cheap aswell. I bought £3 worth and had enough to stuff a display panda carcass.

Punch 2 wholes with a nail in either side of the lid and put the polyfil through. that works as an air filter.

Now use your pots as normal. fill them with substrate, leave the lids slightly open and pressure cook them (not directly on the bottom of the cooker. Don't worry, they won't melt unless you leave it on too long and steam all the water out. I'd also advice cooking them for less than the recommended time since slighty open pots allows the germ killing steam to penetrate deeper. Dispute it if you want but this always works for me).

As soon as you open the cooker close the lids and let the pots cool down.

Now get your spore syringe and some surgical tape. Use a lighter to heat the needle red hot, then you can inject through the top of the tub, drop the spores, remove the needle and quickly cover with surgical tape. This method makes keeping contaminants out much easier.

Have fun guys...

In return, could anyone recomend any good brands of bird seed or other grain I could get in the UK cheaper than rye grain....

Yah, those and 'innocent' veggie pots are good for various things.  I use them for dunking individual cakes.

BTW everyone, Sainsburys "small resealable all purpose bags" (sandwich bags) are not watertight.  Two nights in a row I've been trying to use them to fill syringes from a print, whilst my valuable spore water leaks all over the floor of my glovebox.  The first time I thought it might be my fault, but now I'm sure they're just fucking leaky.

hmm, what are you trying to use the sandwich bags for? the shot glass method has always worked for me. plus you can use it to top-up syringes when they're almost dead, for instance: boil the kettle, fill a glass with boiling water, cover with cling film and leave for an hour or so. then get your almost empty syringe, burn the needle, inject, and suck more water in. you can do this loads of times and still be left with 1000s of spores in the syringe each time.

By the way, does anyone know the best way to use make agar and liquid cultures in the UK. I bought a bottle of agar off micro-science but it was terribly over-priced and filled about 4 dishes. i want to look into making my own but ingredients are so hard to source.

Print in baggie, empty blanks into baggie, rub spores off print, fill syringes by poking them into baggie.  Works great unless your baggie's already got holes

Did the exact same thing .  Look up the recipes for PDA on this site; you can find UK sellers on Ebay selling agar (vegan food sellers) and dextrose (workout supplement sellers) in powder form.

I see. Agar is that seaweed stuff and dextrose is pure glucose or summin'?

The whole potato boiling bit seems a bit confusing... Do I slice and boil up the potatoes and then use the water as the agent for the dextrose and agar?

And then can I eat the potatoes afterwards? :crazy2:

Agar is seaweed that seaweed stuff.
Dextrose is 'right handed' glucose, all the same as far as the mycelium knows. Use them interchangeably.

Yes.

Dextrose is a type of sugar, yes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dextrose (it's not glucose though)

Sounds like you've got it.

Making your own agar this way is going to be a lot cheaper than those 100ml bottles they're selling online.

Try your local oriental supermarket for agar agar. You should be able to make a litre of jelly for less than £5.
It comes in extruded translucent ribbons a bit like noodles and just needs grinding and sieving to make a homogeneous powder just like the overpriced scientific supplies.
If you don't grind it to a powder then the liquid just ends up a bit lumpy but still usable.
