points out the problem is the frame of reference.

shamans exist.

all of our arguing about what they do or do not do is like virgins arguing about a porn star's behavior offcamera...as it is by definition, unseen; we really don't have a clue.

what shamans do or don't do in their secret ceremonies that they pass on to apprentices, if anyone; is something we, unless you are one of the lucky ones who have actually apprenticed under a true shaman somewhere, are left out of. 

a "those who know don't need to talk, and those who need to talk don't know" kind of thing, i expect.

if i were to bet, it would be on a whole spectrum of drug use and non-use for shamans around the world, just like people and cultures.
most likely some do, some don't, and lots lie about it to outsiders...just like us.:wink:

People often get the word shaman confused with images of things like witchdoctors and people bent over strange concoctions to enter into the spirit world.

Shamans, as I understand the most general use of the term in most cultures, are religious leaders and spiritual healers for people.  The use or non-use of drugs is besides the fact, as that isn't what is focused on, it's the ritual that the shaman is called for or the situation that he/she is needed to fix.

It does sound pretty elitist of her to say that. "Real shamans don't use drugs."  Well they probably don't see them from the limited Western 'drug that gets you fucked up' viewpoint.

Shaman, witch doctor, seer, medicine man... I think they are all synonymous.

I find it really interesting that this shaman does not use drugs. I have heard a lot about shamanism and the use of various drugs however there hasn't been much information about drugless forms of shamanism although I have heard stuff here and there about it.

What is your girlfriend seeing a shaman for? Is she seeing the shaman as a way of connecting with her soul? IS she trying to cleanse herself of something? Is she seeing the shaman for another reason?

What does this shaman do? DOes he or she do drumming? WHat sort of rituals is involved in this type of shamanism? IS there a website for it?
