Why do we learn?
    #1162213 -

Today I was thinking about how there is some sort of direct or indirect motivation behind everything we do.  But then I thought about learning.

I go to school to learn.  As of right now, I do not have any particular career choice in mind.  I am not going to school so that I can get a "good" job and make lots of money and become a "functioning" member of society.

I am simply there to learn.

And I like doing it!

You may be saying to yourself that I've just answered my own original question.  The fact that I like learning is my motivation for doing it.  Afterall, the simple fact that "we like it" is our motivation for doing lots of things in life.

Okay then... I change my question.  Why do we like learning??

For most things that we like, there is a direct reason.  It feels good.  It tastes good.  Etcetera, etcetera.  But I can't think of one good reason why we should like learning!

Sure, if we learn things, we can get good jobs and all that stuff... But I'm talking about learning for the sake of learning.  I'm sure I'm not the only one who enjoys this.  But I just can't figure out why!!!

Someone please help!

Because our brains are built to learn. Whether in school or not you will learn throughout life.

are you really "learning" or just acquiring knowledge? hm? I see school as the latter because as you said, we are there in order to get disciplined into whatever part we choose or get put to fill in the machine. We don't learn to be compassionate to each other, we don't learn to be understanding, we are just gathering information that may become useful to us in our jobs.

Those are both true, but they still don't explain why we like to learn.

In fact, I think I may have even "learned" to like learning.  Way back in elementary school I used to hate learning!  But perhaps that was only because it was forced upon me.

Now I enjoy learning on my own.  Learning for learning's sake.  I cannot think of one logical reason why I should like to, though!

What is it that really drives us to acquire information and fill our brains with more and more "stuff"?

Perhaps what I'm referring to is simply "acquiring knowledge"... But for me, and I'm sure for a lot of you out there, I do not acquire knowledge to become a more useful and functioning member of the machine.  I do it just for the sake of acquiring knowledge!  And I don't understand why!

It is natural for most humans to want to learn. However most humans are brainwashed into thinking that the important things they learn are from school, and in order for information to be accurate, someone in authority has to be teaching it. In otherwords. And there are those who rebel against being taught. They don't realise it, but they too want to learn, only they don't like the way they are being fed the information.

learning is using the mind ... when one knows/learns things he is dividing himself from the others ... he is becoming an individual ... creating his own reality.

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?
