How to tell a false prophet.

"When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."

This is a clear case of fallacious ad hoc reasoning. Let me translate: If your prediction comes true then God spoke through you, if not, then you did it on your own.

Let's say I get 100 people together and have them guess the flip of a coin. Roughly 50% of the people are obviously God-inspired.

Now you know.

meh, I interpret this as a way to tell if a person is a false prophet, it really doesn't speak about judging if a person is a true prophet.  You can assume from the passage that a prophet is one who whenever speaketh in thy name of thy Lord thy thing followeths, but it does not mention that just because that which a person speaketh followeths, that person must be a prophet.

Faith in itself is logical, but to have faith in illogical things is not.  I say this because ultimately, nobody knows the true ultimate nature of the universe or purpose of life, everything we do comes down to faith.  However, we should use logic to refine that which we have faith in.

Could you explain this more?

Are you saying the concept of belief in something despite evidence to the contrary is illogical, but for humans this lack of logic is logical?

It sounds confusing and it's hard to word, but what I am saying is everything comes down to faith, every single choice we make.  There is no logical reason to do anything.  One of the most basic faiths we have is that we should listen to what our body tells us, the drive to eat, sleep, protect ourselves, the drives to preserve our life.  These drives are not logical at all, logic cannot put any value on life.  We go on preserving our lives because we have faith in living, faith that we should listen to our bodies.

Everything comes down to faith, but we must use logic to decide what to have faith in.  Like I said, the most basic faith is faith in life.  From faith in life, we choose to act in favor of living, preserving ourselves, our species, and other life forms.  From our drive to preserve life comes science.  Science is about understanding the universe and how things work, we have faith in our destiny, to preserve our species, make it larger, and more capable, and science is a tool which helps us in our plight. 

Faith in living is a true faith because ultimately that which we are most certain of is the fact that we do live.  It is logical to have faith in that which we are most certian of.  It is illogical to have faith in things which have never been observed, go against observed patterns of the universe, and go against living and bettering ourselves.

I see humans as the materialization of ideas.  We have faith in our ideas, and these ideas drive us. When these ideas drive us, it is the ideas which are in charge, they are larger than us and we are just the pawns of these otherwise invisible forces.  We can stop having faith in a set of ideas, but we then instantly have faith in a new set of ideas, and we merge our strength with these new ideas.  We all have to find something to have faith in.
