Speaking as someone in a band that was signed to a label:

The label charged customers $10-13/CD.
We got: $1.61/CD

Why go with a label? To distinguish yourselves from every other pipsqueak buncha n00bs with brand new gear from Guitar Center who think they're gonna be the next Rolling Stones.

Think of all the band requests on MySpace. It actually doesn't matter if a new band is fucking awesome, without help they are NOT gonna stand out. Market saturation, yada yada.

So a label is confirmation that someone else actually thinks your music is worth listening to. They get all your CD sale money, but you get exposure and distribution. If you by some chance become a hit, enough $1.61's will add up.

However, being signed is a tier only slightly above DIY, because there are also a fuckload of bands on labels. So really, only a very very very very small percentage of bands get enough $1.61's to go full-time.

So how do bands make anything? Good question. Oh, I know! "Musicians get rich off touring!"

Don't make me fuckin laugh.

We toured America. Touring America was ridiculous. The rockstar moments we'd had mainly didn't happen on the road. On tour, if we actually got a gig that paid more than our expenses, we then had to split the profit among the four of us. Most of the tour dates in America turned out to be five drunk fratboys in the back yelling "Play Freebird HAW HAW."

We toured Germany and Europe. Much nicer (more respect, no foolspots yelling Freebird) but we were the support group, and the 4000€ we made in two weeks off direct CD sales went to the headlining band. Hey, at least we broke even.

OK so why do it?

In the hopes that by simply being out there, you will get a break, and then you can lay your day job aside.

Most bands don't plan for a different outcome than Getting Totally Famous. Reason: We'd rather concentrate on the music. Doing that AND being all music-bidness-savvy is beyond most. So far, I include myself in this.

When bands realise this, they either (1) float along P/T, with a day job; (2) get at least passing skills for the bidness end of it; or (3) break up.

So, back to the point of the thread: is downloading stealing?

As a musician, I'd say it'd be nicer if you bought the shit so our label would at least want to renew our contract next time. BUT. The fact is, back before all this digital stuff, people were making each other mix tapes. That's how music gets out there. So if it's a choice between you downloading our shit, and nobody hearing it, guess what we'd pick, esp. since the label is getting most of the money anyway.

If we're going to get famous, it's going to be because enough people heard us that they flock to our shows, and anyone yelling "Play Freebird" gets drowned out in the general hysteria.

Okay like I've said before this is simply not true. Stealing from someONE, taking something that belongs to them and not to you, it wrong and if you do it I'll agree that you are a scumbag. But I would never ever ever feel bad about walking into a wal-mart, seeing say 500 copies of a dvd, and taking one. That doesn't make me a piece of shit it makes me smart (until you get caught). Not everyone who think stealing from corporations is okay thinks that stealing anything is ok and you need to realize this. You say a thief is a thief but some thiefs do have morals.

Just because WalMart can afford 500 DVDs means you have the right to take one? WalMart is a corporation, and for all intents and purposes, WalMart is a person. They have tons of money and can afford tons of shit... but how can you justify taking something that is not yours?

Walmart is not a person, walmart is a huge business that buys things in massive bulk from whoever produces the product and then sells them for huge profit. 1 dvd means nothing to them, and I would not feel bad for stealing one. Taking something from someones house is a different story I already said that I think that is wrong.

It's wrong to take something you didn't EARN. It makes you a thief... be it a DVD from WalMart or your mom's perscription pills. It boggles my mind how people can justify stealing. :shrug:

I just think maybe you are all poor and possibly jobless, but still feel entitled to things you don't really deserve. It's typical young American teenager bullshit.

Peer to peer sharing is not stealing. There's no difference between peer to peer downloads and someone lending you a CD, that they purchased, to burn. Nobody stole anything. Then you may ask, well where did the original file(s) come from. Someone may have purchased it and uploaded it, or it leaked and nobody purchased it. Neither constitutes stealing. Good lawyering is the reason p2p downloading is considered stealing

But no matter... the internet will always come up with new ways to SHARE media undetected..
