Shroomery Suicides

Of the ones that I am aware of (those that posted in this forum or M&P), ALL were believers in some weird mix of aliens, angels, demons, prophecy and Armageddon. Not a skeptic/rationalist among them.

Causation or correlation?

I think this shows your limited knowledge of Shroomery suicides more than anything, partly due to to the fact that you only keep track of two forums.  Ever heard of sample bias?

It makes sense really, number of delusional thoughts is correlated to a higher chance of commiting suicide.

I don't see how his limited knowledge of Shroomery suicides is relevant, considering that he explicitly spoke only of the ones he was aware of.
Its all right to make a stretch though in order to simply spite another poster, even if it does take a couple edits to make it look somewhat credible. :grin:

I personally knew of one suicide in real life and that was a member of Heaven's Gate. I wonder if they believed in any UFO/end-of-world wackiness... :strokebeard:

Correlation of course. People who believe in that stuff simply are not accepted by society, and get hated until they die inside of misery. That's why they kill themselves I guess. People are social beings..

Apparently you have not read much of their writings about wanting to reunite with the Cosmos.

I don't remember reading a single post about wanting to escape social ostracization.

It's subconscious imo, most people don't know or understand their self. But wait.. reuniting with the Cosmos? Are you saying they killed themselves because of that? Why wouldn't you be able to reunite with the cosmos while alive?

Agreed.  The only example of a belief causing suicide I can think of off the top of my head  would be Islam.  Examples should be unnecessary.  So it isn't to say that beliefs cannot cause suicide.  It is unfortunately obvious they can.  Both Orgone and myself saw one suicide in the making and each of did what we could to stop it.  We failed and ViBrAnT chose death over life.

Hmmm, I wonder which group is generally more stable:

A. Members of a forum that allows for open debate.

B. Members of a forum so mired in fear as to disallow contrary viewpoints.

It's not about the the paticular irrational belief itself but that someone who can believe in something totally irrational has a higher chance of believing something else totally irrational and delusional such as suicidal thought patterns IMO.

I think a belief in the value of strict rational thought really is protective against suicidal thoughts and actions. I consider myself a rationalist, and to me the math of killing yourself just doesn't add up. Logically speaking, there simply isn't a situation in which it's an advantageous choice. So yes, I think there is at least a strong correlation between rational thought and lowered suicide rates ... which of course suggests that the inverse is also true.

that also depends on your idea of rationality. OC always infers that only skeptical minds are rational. which is pretty much absurd

If skepticism is defined as being on your guard against gullibility then I agree that skepticism is part of rationality ... but I dunno if that's the same definition he's using.
