Production vs Consumption - A Life Philosophy
    #10138878 -

I've been doing a lot of self reflection recently about the life I live and the model life for which I'd like to strive to, and what my dreams truly are.  Within this thinking, I've come to realize one of my primary efforts is to actively produce rather than actively consume, which to me means being more productive in terms of my spare time, taking on projects, building things, and creating things within my own inherit ability to do so.  Although this does involve the consumption of goods, it's still the act of collaboration of goods for production of something else, rather than pure consumption.

I've extrapolated this logic and trying to integrate my life with it.  I've found tv, internet, eating out, and outsourcing my efforts to others leads me to a looking out consumption perspective rather than looking in, which is what I find to be the more natural order of things.  The natural order of things is truly what I'm trying to tap into, going with the stream rather than against it, and I find productive habits that benefit myself, and, thus, the whole, is much more in harmony than the bad habits I've developed through my childhood in the technology driven Western society I've been bred in.

I was wondering if anybody shares in this realization, and how they like to incorporate this philosophy into their lifestyle.  What do you like to produce, and how do you mitigate your consumption?

I'd like to possibly start a business of some sort and live a more communal lifestyle dedicated to collaborative work and communication.  Also, get more familiar with sustainable foraging, build things, grow gourmet/medicinal fungus, and grow and talk to plants...are a few of the things I'd like and am taking on.

I feel the exact same way, I try to be working towards these things but most of them will just take time, which is frustrating at the moment because I feel stuck.
I feel if with purpose in this case production or output of self is one true way (at least for me) in finding happiness.

Yeah, that's just it, these activities a lot of times require patience, discipline and foresight, demanding you look ahead into things, prepare, plan, whatever.
Also, this was all predicated on figuring out the things that would make me happy as a person in my life, and this is a very tangible avenue to happiness.

Awesome!

i do share this realization.
i grow mushrooms outdoors and garden and play with my son- he's an amazing teacher!
one day i strive to go to town and have it be an exchange more often than not.
where im at is trying to break un- productive patterns that i have witnessed in my behavior. funnily enough, cutting way down on smoking mj cut out a lot of my unnessasary consuming.
i too am aiming to build a sustainable business- the mushrooms i mentioned outdoors are oysters. i have realized at the moment money is a usefull tool- we have to get by as a family- living soley off the land  can be done one day then money can be let go of.
i live in the ozark mts of nth west arkansas.
we too are striving to live a more communal lifestyle working and playing with friends/family/chosen family and nature, sustainably, foraging, growing, and what not.
we like visitors : )

sounds awesome... I hope to live off the land to the best of my abilities soon

not that there's any other way to live really... just too many middle men and plastic packaging

I stopped smoking marijuana a month or so ago, and I feel much more alive. While insights and feelings on it seemed to justify the usage (though in themselves fruited little), quitting has really been a blessing

Physical production and emotional/spiritual production? "Work" and "art". I like having a job, not just for the pay. I mean, I wouldn't do it for free, but I've found that getting something out of a job, beyond a paycheck, makes it better for me. A lot of bosses suck, and there can be a draw to self employment, cause there is the idea "I can be more productive." Jobs can hold people back, or give them room to express themselves.

I like to play guitar.

I like to consume.

Things produced are meant to be consumed in some way, so 50/50, the middle road, might be good.

 Within the past year or so I recently came to a similar realization. I had ethically opposed mass consumerism as it was preached and practiced in the US for some time, but finally concluded that I had to be more self-sufficient to not be a total hypocrite. Peak oil, economic instability, and awful store bought food are nice motivators too.

So I dropped out of grad school and worked at an organic farm for a little. My wife, who also shared this realization, and I saved up and bought some land about 6 months ago to start a little homestead. Our garden is producing wonderfully now and we are busy with lots of projects. It's a great feeling. Also in my spare time I'm taking an online permaculture course (a great holistic design philosophy, highly recommended).

This is difficult for me, as the economy of empire definitely has an intoxicating allure. I live in an area of the US that is not so, eh, friendly and open to being different it seems. My family is supportive but they think I'm a bit 'extreme' (I admit I usually am, but the world today seems extreme too). I mostly get support from my wife and online acquaintances. With this support and a lot of discipline, I've been able to cut back on much unnecessary consumption.

I feel you. It seems daunting when the whole world is headed in the other direction. I gain hope though from the fact that there seems to be a self-sufficiency revival of some sort taking place, especially with the recent economic decline. This overreached empire is on its last legs and I feel energized by the fact we will be the ones to transition and build a new world in its place.

thanks! i wish you well!
true that we really all do live off the land- and about the middle men and packaging.
insights are also being put to better use in my natural state..... a little clarity allows me to work and play well.

yo brotha,

you are ill :stoned:

I am opening an organic deli/market in Bristol, RI - our aim is to be a prepared farmer's market, with many of our sandwiches and salads, branded for the farm, as it were a traditional farmer's market. Two goals; organic, and locally sourced. It may take a long while to become 100% locally sourced, but that is our goal. On a side note, pharmer's are some of the best people i've had the pleasure of doing business with.

I 100% agree with your realization. Western society is so bogus, and the technologies we live in, really do shape us. Personally, I think it is pathetic. My life improved ten folds the day I stopped using AIM and Facebook.

I hear ya man. I have picked up piano for a bit a year now. Can play a handful or so, popular tunes, but basically I just turn the radio on, try to get the funkiest stuff on, and jam the hell out of the key board. Most fun I've ever had I think.

Keep rockin on brotha !
