To me, enlightenment would be the things you mention.  But stopping trying to manipulate your experience by changing your programming in turn will loosen the programming's grip.  You begin to act more spontaneously.  Eventually you stop reacting all-together, and then you only act deliberately.  Then you are "free."  That's the idea anyway.  I know it works up to the "you act more spontaneously."  I now NOTICE when I react.  Instead of just reacting.  I know how the process works because of stopping my mind from wandering in meditation.  Eventually you catch it sooner and sooner and then you don't have to worry about it all.  You just don't wander.  Same deal here.  Eventually we'll stop reacting.

You answered your question. Programs are created by repeating patterns or creating habits. There are countless examples of this in human culture. Most do not see their patterns and so believe them to be solid truths. This IMO is not very awake. If you think a pattern or habit is "truth" why would you try to alter it, searching for something more workable?

I'm not sure this is a proper response but consider the person who is obsessive/compulsive but thinks a particular behavior is their problem.  They break the "habit" of one thing but go into another, equally compulsive, behavior.  How does that dovetail into your idea of being programmed?
