One hypothesis suggests that the Big Bang created cosmic ripples in spacetime, and that the progression of these ripples is accelerating expansion.  Many others have used the "dark energy" concept to fill in the gaps between what we observe & what we can explain.

Hmm...none of that sounds very definitive. I don't think we've proven that there is a fixed amount of energy in the Universe. Although as I said before, it depends on what you define as your system. And whether or not that system is open or closed.

Well, thus far nothing suggests that there is NOT a finite amount of energy in the universe.  I am not aware of a single scientific hypothesis regarding the expansion of the universe which contradicts the first law of thermodynamics.

Well the concept of infinite mass and energy doesn't violate it either.

That is a problem inherent with history.  You can rarely prove or disprove a theory with the certitude available in science.  We don't know, and we won't know, if there is a fixed amount of energy in the universe.  What we are left with is speculation.  True, some hypotheses are more cogent than others (and some of that relies on bias or a priori beliefs) while other theories are opinions of nutters.  Who can say with certitude?  No one.

No, but the concept of energy being added/created does.  The first law of thermodynamics is based upon observation and experimentation, and has proven predictive in every instance.  It is impossible to prove or disprove whether the universe is finite, but all evidence available to us strongly suggests that it is.

I am interested in this subject, and I am not an expert.  Data seems to indicate that our universe is flat, and a popular theory has 7-9 more universes horizontally aligned like magnets.  Until we answer the question of how space expands, how can we be certain of it's true properties.

and what if space was just that.. some expanding dimension... this sort of idea could never be explained through science.

Why not? You can't just claim that science can't explain things without saying why.

Science usually starts as theory and discovery, theory is just people shooting the shit with rules.

It is annoying to have to be scientist or even people on this site throw shit at you for just saying anything, thinking they are more intelligent by throwing monkey shit around.

It is nice to be able to back something up, but people really try so hard to have the ultimate say so by just saying for you to prove something..

Drug chemicals are going to be more abundant and survive longer than any anti-drug agendas.  Some of us are just ahead of the game, we already know what the future will understand.  Drugs weren't bad but how some people used them were and some people just were bad because they had to be.

Ok then,

science cannot explain something like space being an expanding dimension because in order to gague the expansion of this dimension scientifically you would have to have some other non-expanding dimension that you could compare it to.

Scientists could potentially come to the consensus that they think space is an expanding dimension, whereby all of its relationships are, by its very nature, 'increasing' compared to the size of its energy contents (eg protons & electrons)

but they could never conduct experiments to prove it

Science by definition can never prove a theory; science can only disprove a hypothesis.

It is violence without a victim and very cathartic. Nary a whinney from the horse, although it does piss off the animal activists - and they can't even tell you why.

:foreheadslap:  I wish someone would have said that in the first place.  It'a bit irritating that some keep these pearls of wisdom to themselves.

I wish we had about 500 hundred sticky threads to cover most of the crap we have to keep repeating. Then we might actually be able to make forward progress instead of dragging an anchor.

Stickies?  We have dozens that are never read as it is.  Progress?  We're making speedy progress, in circles.  Some of us have actually learned to type.  Besides, nuanced, intellectual arguments are boring compared to repeating yourself again and again and again and again and again.

What we need are fresh ideas like, "Does God exist?"
