balanced diet 1lb of bacon in one hand and 1lb of eggs in the other
I mentioned this topic to my mother and there was apparently an interview with some doctor saying that most of these supplements dont even dissolve in your stomach, you can eat the pills at 6am and at 4pm take an xray and still see the pill, it's all about the money

Well that's why you generally piss neon green after taking multivitamins.. you are pissing almost all of it out.. your body can't absorb it that fast. You need a "buffer period" where you are taking multivitamins every day, for your body to start absorbing some of those nutrients.. Seems like a waste to me, when you can easily just get all those vitamins... straight from the food you eat.. and they are instantly available to your body. You don't need to eat sushi every day, for 3 weeks.. in order to reap the benefits, for example. As far as I know, B vitamins take the longest to build up in the body.. and getting that from natural sources such as sweet potatoes is far superior to supplementing it.

Bear in mind there are also plenty of incentives for pharmaceutical companies to try to discount the health benefits and/or efficacy of alternative supplements and vitamins--why have people be healthy taking Vitamin C when you can purchase some Tylenol instead?

lets suppose for a minute the BigName Pharmaceuticals owns LittleGuy Vitamin Company through some proxy corporation, why not produce both a multi vitamin that either does nothing or actually causes some ailment, wouldnt they then get the benefit of selling you both these products all the while they bash their own subsidiary by claiming that it doesnt prevent anything but their drug cures what ever ails you, and even it does nothing of benefit, in some cases may be worse than the affliction it's supposed to treat... it's a snake oil game
here's some examples of the BigName drugs http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23868978/ http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_04/b4068052092994.htm
lets look at the other end of the spectrum http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Stossel/story?id=4636224&page=1 http://www.drnatura.com/
all of these are examples of scams perpetrated on the consumer, one by the big corporations and the others supposedly from small companies, the Dr.Natura colon cleanse crap actually causes the problem it's supposedly ridding you of, the Kinoki shit is just a scam as are the cholesterol drugs

Because you can't patent a plant or an herb.
Are you claiming that no vitamin or supplement is beneficial in any way?

As far as I'm aware, drug companies cannot patent commonly used plants that are usually far more effective than over-the-counter drugs.

the jury is still out on the effectiveness and lets face it, if a company really wants to, they can do about anything, look at the organic scam in addition to patents of food crops, it only takes a little modification to get the patent, it takes nothing more than a little pollen from the patented stuff getting to the flowers of the wild stuff and the ofspring showing that modified DNA for the patent to apply... seriously, read up, especially about lawsuits

And let's not forget that the FDA made it illegal so no vegetable or raw food or herb can claim to have ANY health benefits - this is why you won't see claims on say, a bag of broccoli - "BROCCOLI IS GOOD FOR THE HEART AND FIGHTS CANCER!" (It does), but this is against the law. You couldn't even advertise an orange saying like.... ORANGES ARE THE CURE FOR SCURVY!
Yet they can take some processed crap, throw it into a bottle and claim basically whatever they want.
I think supplements can have their place once in a while.. but let's not kid ourselves here.. almost anything in its whole, natural form is going to be better than something that has been freeze-dried, processed, concentrated, and had whatever other alterations done to it... with very few exceptions. It is always better to get everything from your diet and not rely on popping a pill in order to ensure you are getting a "well balanced diet and all your vitamins". It's the same thing with eating like white bread that has been enriched with vitamins. It's absolutely NO replacement for whole grains. Anything that has been stripped of its original nature in whole form is going to be of lesser quality.

I also use ginger and cayenne. Some things (like dairy) will still leave me in excrutiating pain no matter what unless I take enzymes.

Do you have a source for this? I searched quickly but couldn't find anything.
If they actually ruled that way, it is absolutely crazy. I wouldn't out it past them, though.

it's actually true, it's a lot of shit to wade through but there's a lot of claims you cant make because it hasnt been 'scientifically proven'

I only did a really quick search and I found this - http://www.naturalnews.com/024567.html There's a lot of info out there.. but it's pretty well established. The pharmaceutical companies can claim almost whatever they want about their product. But if some health food place makes a claim about a natural product, they can get sued into the ground and put out of business, completely shut down.. it's been known to happen many times,
Just take a trip into the grocery store. Look at the produce section. Notice any amazing health claims? Nope. But that's probably the healthiest part of the store. Then go into the vitamin isle..
