Also, the belief in aliens hurts your belief in God(s). If a Christian God made everything, and made us in His image, then what of aliens? If they are more advanced than us than they are better than God? God never speaks of creating unworldly life, yet there it would be. Who made the aliens? What if they have different God(s), or as I would imagine, no God(s) at all?

aliens are angels and demons.  :super:

Fair enough, but why do angels and demons need rides?

to get to one place to another, maybe?

...I kinda was wondering about this awhile back, if aliens made contact with us, and depending on what they say to us, would they be reconized as satan?

Isn't a main theme of skepticism to debunk other's spiritual claims? I have no problem with Atheism.

Atheists are skeptics because they don't share your beliefs. Therefor in conclusion they are imposing standards? Assuming that you are among the largest of world religions (Christianity with 30%) that means 70% of the world is skeptical of your faith.

So you presume that 70% of the earth imposes its belief upon you?

Imposing is when they force something. Since I am not aware of many (if any) laws pending that inhibit you of your practice, I fail to see where the "imposing" comes from.

I view imposing as when I can't buy beer or a car on sunday because it's against Christian belief. I see imposing belief when I walk down the street I see picket lines of people screaming at me that I'm going to go to their made up hell and I'm nothing more than an animal. I view the fact that because I'm an Atheist I can't hold public office or testify in court in 7 states as a tad imposing. Hearing George Bush Sr. say that he believes Atheists shouldn't be citizens is imposing. I can go on and on.

First off I am not Christian, so there goes half your post. Secondly, yes, I believe that by saying what I believe is not true unless I can provide proof that meets your standards is imposing your standards on my spirituality. I didn't say that you impose your beliefs, I said you impose your standards (of proof) upon my beliefs. I also stated this is referring to skeptics only, not all people who do not share my beliefs.

I am not referring to my beliefs, but all spirituality. Skeptics have the labels "woo", woo bingo and generally revel in mocking other peoples beliefs. There is a general hatred toward christians as seen in your previous post.

I find that Christians and Skeptics feels that they are the determiners of truth. They reference others beliefs in terms of there own beliefs.

Actually stating that you are not Christian merely adds weight to my statement as it just pumps the numbers higher. For all I know that could mean that 99.9% of the world is skeptic. A skeptic is anyone who does not share your claims of authenticity. So unless they share your beliefs, yes, they are skeptics.

Your beliefs wouldn't be brought into the light unless it was you who first brought the faith into the light. Only after you impose your belief upon another do they ask for proof. Before that point they don't care what your belief is, unless it is they themselves forcing their beliefs upon you. But if that was the case then you would be asking evidence of them, not vice versa.

pray tell, what are the "standards" of evidence? You mean something tangible or visible? I suppose having evidence that others can use at least one of their five senses on is a tad offensive in it's assertiveness.

Since I don't know what you believe I can not, nor have I yet stated that what you believe is not true. Now, if you were to "impose" yourself upon me and explain to me why you think you are right and why I'm wrong then yes, I would ask for proof. Playing the victim after no proof can be shown does not make the oppressor the oppressed.

What you claim holds no more validity than when young world Christians yell that by teaching science (namely evolution) we are imposing our beliefs upon them, which is highly dubious. You may believe whatever you wish for right or wrong, but as soon as you start playing the p.c. card to get your way you are playing with fire.

No, only people who define themselves as skeptics fit into what I am talking about. This doesn't refer to 99% of the population. It refers to people who read the God delusion, got to TED conventions, visit the James Randi Foundation forums, ect.

Here is the key. I do not think I am right and you are wrong. I think that what I believe is right for me. There is no absolute right and wrong in spiritual matters. I do not need to explain my beliefs to you, or respond to your requests for proof. As I stated earlier, I have my proof, which in my experience doesn't meet the skeptic rules of acceptable proof. I also never used the phrase oppressor or play the victim. I said you impose your standards of proof on my beliefs.

If you don't understand by now you never will.

Well I took the definition of skeptic right out of the dictionary, but I'm not really going to bother debating word definitions.

I think the biggest difference between you and I is spirituality. As I stated before I have nothing against personal spirituality. Be it Wiccan, Buddhist, Jewish . . . I don't care. It's a personal matter that enriches people's lives.

It's only when these people start pushing their spirituality, in the guise of religion, that I have an issue. Sadly with most mainstream religions that is the case. When the case is brought as such, you better believe I want some cold hard evidence for the reason why I can no longer play my favorite music and read my favorite books. If their answer is "You need faith, now take down your sports memorabilia" you can rest assured I'm going to tell them to stick it and go turn on my Greenbay Packers.

You act as if Atheism is the bandit, yet I have never had an Atheist come to my door to share "why science died for my sins" during my dinner or had people standing on soap boxes in the street screaming that "Darwin loves me and I need to come to him for forgiveness" while I'm shopping.

I am not talking about Atheism. I am talking about scientific skepticism.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skepticism#Scientific_skepticism

It is people who apply the scientific method to all aspects of life to an obsessive degree. The people who play woo bingo, attend TED conventions, hang out on the James Randi Foundation forum. This is much beyond the dictionary word skeptic. It certainly
doesn't include everyone in the world with different beliefs.

I am sorry, I thought that was understood.

I think it would be fair to say that any militant belief (or non belief) is frowned upon be it Science, Philosophical, Literary, or otherwise. I have read Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Albert Einstein, and a slew of other Atheist books. But I have also read Buddhist, Wicca, Taoist, Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Satanic, and a slew of religious books as well.

I never bring up debate on faith unless it's brought to me first. Granted saying that coming to a spirituality forum could be described as looking for trouble, so I'll give you that.

Though I must admit that this "woo bingo" intrigues me.

So today i saw something on the banned books of the bible one of them spoke of Azaziel aka i beleived was lucifer.

Now would I have thought of some death metal god before this?

Another thing to was he tried to make a place above but was cast into hell! Now I cant say whether or not this was for all eternity...

Its out there to say the least, but if you beleive the stuff you read online forbidden knowledge is the knowledge of good and evil and it also means death, so if you were to say you saw god I believe the meaning of this is you saw your own death.

Hate to throw fuel to the fires, but the greeks beleive "there is nothing you can do against the will of the gods." And alot of the old Nogstics beleive that a lesser god created this realm not the one thaat we worship or rather the fire and brimstone dude.

I must highlight the fact you said I'm defending my views. And indeed I would think lesser of any person who doesn't defend themselves.

If it was just having religion shoved in my face I could tolerate it. The oppression that I speak of (and will go over again for your benefit) is when religious organizations do actions like pass their teachings into law in attempts to get others to adhere to their religion. Examples of such would be: drug laws, sharia law, abortion laws, anti-gay laws, racist laws, among others. These laws have been pushed by the religious fanatics, and I don't see it coming to an end in my life time.

It's not "what's out to get me" but "who's out to take from me and control me".

I'm not anti-religion, I'm anti-intolerance. I have had these conversations in the street and on the forums, so your assumption of my cowardliness is unfounded.

You have fun putting your faith in a "zealot nut" because from the sounds of it, you may already do.

Quote:

I'll admit that Catholicism doesn't rule the world anymore, but they are still a powerhouse. If you know anything about medieval times than you know the pope's word was law. Through him (and the byzantine empire) you saw countless wars, women and children burned to death, and years of scientific oppression. People feared to even say out loud that the earth was round for fear of "divine" retribution.

This morality issue is a dead horse, and you guys keep kicking it and kicking it. It has been explained by better men than myself, but I'll take a mighty whack at it.

Man kind has been around much longer than "modern" religion, and the morality has remained (more or less) the same. Granted ancient cultures treated women as livestock, they still had the basic sense of right and wrong. If anything religion goes to show you how people have progressed since their foundings. The old books still tell us to treat women as property and have no qualm with slavery. That's the morality you wish to base your life on? If anything I have a stronger morality than any Christian or Islamic follower, as they would gladly allow "infidels" and "heretics" to die horrible deaths merely to appease their bloody handed God(s). Is this the religious morality of which you speak?

You are misusing the word evidence. Does evidence suggest that YOU believe that the dirt is YOUR God? Yes. Does the evidence suggest that the ball of dirt is A God? No.

You people seem to be forgetting that the responsibility of evidence lies completely with the person making the claim. We don't need proof that your claims are unfounded, as claims made without evidence are dismissed without evidence. We don't need evidence to refute claims made with no evidence, none what-so-ever. That burden is purely yours my friend.

Quote:

Unless you are using the word "God" wrong, yes people already know what the word God means, as it already has a definition. If your "God" doesn't fit the criteria of the definition than it's not a God at all, but maybe something like a pet for example. The issue lies with the people who believe in a God (by definition). Obviously you understand what it is that makes your dirt a God, but neither you or your God can seem to show us. "Negative proof" doesn't exist. It's a word made up by people who can't prove their claims. I'll post what I said before:

Quote:
We are not asking you if evidence may or may not exist. We are asking for evidence for your claim. Nothing more, nothing less. Telling me: I can't prove that there is not proof that may be found to support the claim that you currently can't prove, therefor proving your claim as true doesn't help your argument at all, but merely makes you look silly. That's called circle logic.

I never once claimed to be a "know it all". I will say I'm a "give me some evidence" guy. I'm more than willing to believe your mud ball is God, and if I saw your mud perform a muddy miracle you bet your bottom dollar I would start praying to the mud God and his gravelly  angels on that very spot. But the simple fact is I wont believe anything anyone says without at least a shred of proof, as blindly believing things will leave me nothing but poor, broken, and dieing, or as some faiths call it "blessed".

Quote:
Friend, I know I cannot prove to you what God is or if It exists. I can however hand you dirt and tell you that is my God. How can you state otherwise? It is my belief to ME it is true, just as to YOU it is not true.

It's unfortunate that you can't prove your God to me, because I would love to be reincarnated as a superstar, Go to heaven, get 72 virgins, or whatever your divine reward is. Right or wrong, until such a time I will go on following the other things that at least can show me something to back up their claims. The only difference between your belief and mine in the mud God is my belief is founded on evidence (or the lack thereof) while yours is based on faith.

You can believe in that mud your whole life, I'm fine with that. Your mud God can tell you to be slathered in mud 24/7. That's cool. But as soon as your mud God tells you to start slinging mud at people, or you attempt to pass a law stating that every Friday I have to roll around in mud for half an hour, I'm going to draw a line.
