Paranormal Events
    #9358541 -

An event is an interaction of two or more forces or collections of matter within time and occurring within our universe. If it is not somehow observable or inferable from observable phenomenon, then the event cannot be rationally said to exist.

Paranormalists time and again claim to have witnessed/experienced some phenomenon and will often tell others that they, too could witness such a thing.

When investigation unveils nothing at all outside of misperception, then the exception clause of 'you must have faith' is added.

BTW, I am not talking about non-repeatable phenomenon, but events claimed to able to be witnessed by all such as Reiki or telekinesis or crop circles or...?

The 'must have faith' condition which was not initially mentioned, itself has never been demonstrated nor is it necessary in any other physical event.

A car in good working order will start every time regardless of the mind state of the driver. Period.

But to say that "I can read minds except when I can't," or "I can read minds when in the presence of other gullible minds who will go along with me no matter what," or any of the thousand other ephemeral claims that dissipate when looked at, is just plain ridiculous.

And Santa Clause will come if you only believe...

Why do you assume people are talking about repeatable testable events? I don't think it neccassarily exists but you seem to refute all possibility simply because it can't be tested. You then ignore frequent reports of personal experience and others observations of the experience simply because it wasn't in a lab. I don't get it.

One person experienced something....for them it was very real, and it existed.

You have not experienced it, you are only listening to another person describe it. It is not real to you because you are only imagining another's experience, not actually experiencing for yourself. How can you test for something that might be an anomaly, and only happen under extremely random circumstances?

When a person says "you must have faith" they mean you must trust that what they saw was real.

But, of course, that can be quite hard when you don't share that persons perceptions.

Every single one of my 34 Swami (my old screenname) Challenges was in response to a claim of repeatability. I never proposed a challenge to a one-time event.

Not hardly my dear, but as I have been around longer I have had more opportunity to see how the human mind works.

Should I ignore the 10,000 reports of the Phoenix Lights as an alien Mothership when their own videos showed the lights to be military flares? Or should I embrace their misinterpretation?

Which is the more logical stance?

IMO the notion of faith is kind of twisted when it comes to these things.
Lets say that if you witness an angel coming to your room , it is a thought form.
Simply projected as very close to real , if not more real than your "regular" reality.
This specific thought form would appear if, by your previous belief system, an angel is something you believe in and would be comfortable with for communication.
So.. the so called "aliens" would attempt communication in this way.
If you dont believe (have faith) that contact is possible and available to you , then they have nothing to work with, so to speak.
And furthermore , they will not attempt to , unless you request it.

When it comes to telepathy , i dont think "reading minds" is the difficult part.. It would be telling something to somebody that could be tricky..
Now.. you can call it faith.. But it is a matter of how receptive the person is , how he would analyze this contact , and whether he willingly agrees to it.
As far as telekinesis goes.. Only the one performing it has to believe he can.
And then.. you need to master the skill of it..
Its not really like riding a bike..
Takes a lot of energy , and if more people are focused on the same action it would be more probable to manifest itself.

So.. If you want contact with higher spiritual beings , and santa clause wont scare you , and you would like to "see him" for example..
It might just happen..And you would have a big fat santa clause explaining to you the nature of consciousness

Not to say it would be really him

Again.. this is what i believe and im sorry if it hinders the debate ..if it was requested.

You make the exact same mistake as all the fringe believers that come through here.

Skeptics do not ignore the experience (I heard a noise), but the interpretation (it was a ghost).

Skeptics do not ignore the experience (I saw a light), but the interpretation (it was an alien ship).

This is true. You don't get it.

I don't know if it exists or not. My mind is open to proofs, either personal or scientific. But even if I had a personal experience I wouldn't trust my senses completely to the extent to announce to the world that it was reality. I don't ignore frequent reports but file them under no proof (along with taking a good look at who exactly is reporting this) the same way I file the it when Christians tell me I'm going to hell for not believing in the "only true god which they have personal experience of". Can you see where this can lead you if you don't watch out?

On a more serious note, even the example of you stabbing a knife through my hand does nothing to prove the existence of an objective reality.

I have the mental experience of pain, and the mental experience of seeing you stab my hand.  This in no way proves that the knife actually exists, just like seeing and feeling a spider bite my hand on Datura in no way proves the spider actually exists.

In that case ..
Try ignoring the interpretation of a chair.
Call it a wooden object.
Then call it a cluster of molecules.
Then call it atoms randomly flying about.
Then call it a physical manifestation of the vibrational frequency that governs its existence.
Do the same for your self.
If you really get it..
You and the chair are really not that different.
You come from the same "source"
And in the physical way of perceiving yourself and your chair.. You can call it an illusion.
Thats what it is..
It only looks that way cause you expect it to..
Your not flying , because you think you cant.
So .. whos the fringe believer ?
Think about it.
You run your entire life on a misconception..
Its so easy to be a myth buster..
Cause the crowd you are convincing , wants to hear it isnt possible.
for various reasons..
Do not mistake me for a gullible fool..
I got my thoughts strait before i came here to tell you that you can "move shit with your mind"
To me.. Its not questionable anymore..
Its FACT.
Just like the chair is a chair to you.
You can sit on chairs..
I can hear what you think.
Whether you want to or not..
You broadcast it..
The interpretation is the experience..
Always..
Why?
Because if my interpretation is an alien ship.
And 6 billion people say various different things.
Who is anybody to say what "truly" happened without involving personal interpretation ?
Would you have a machine do it ?
Same thing.. It would be filtered through 1 an 0 ..
And.. The machine would be man made anyway..
Implying.. The knowledge obtained BY MAN , through .. what other than personal interpretation.
You can try to establish justice with numbers.Saying .. all of these people didnt see it ..
Or all of these people say , that this or that is true..
But do you really want to be part of that number ?
Fuck no..
Id  rather have people say ive lost my mind than believe that this is as good as it gets..

Like i said this is my view.
And i just think people need to get over it..
Its not debatable ...
Not anymore..

I'm going to say for the purposes of life and reality it may as well exist. Just because we cannot prove it doesn't mean it isn't there. Basically it's as real as you're gonna get.

Except for the lack of a spider bite.

So if you take a drug and believe you see a car coming at you at 60mph it's the same as standing in the freeway. Some how this is another experiment you would not want to carry out.

I think ultimately the reality of the situation is that subjective and objective are merely different facets of the same thing (there is no hard line between the observer and the observed).  Trying to chase objective paranormal phenomena is like trying to chase objective hallucinations--it's impossible.  This, however, does not change the fact of their subjective reality (which is all that counts in the end, anyway).

Exactly, yet at the time we're convinced of its reality.

Couldn't the same be true for life in general?  I'm not arguing that it is; only that the matter is not nearly so clear-cut as an adamant stance in favor of an objective reality.

Things such as spontaneous ESP however are much more solid experience than "I heard a noise".

With a total approaching 30,000 (I have no life) posts, I have covered this (along with nearly every other subject) in great detail.

A common ESP experience is the 'we both thought of the same song at the same time'. This is almost always two people of the same generation and in roughly the same area with many shared experiences and thus share similar cues or triggers. Usually it is a recent song or one that had some importance to the two of you in the past and almost always a song with lyrics, as words cause associations. If you and I tripped together and I was thinking of a Rachmaninoff's 'The Bells' choral masterpiece, I doubt you would ever pick up on that.

GF, there are trillions upon trillions of events every day on earth and there will always be some events coinciding. Those that do not coincide are ignored. This is know as data mining or data selection and is the cornerstone of the mystic's mistaken mindset.

What gets me is that I'm always ridiculously skeptical during the telepathic experiences that I've had while on psychedelics, and I've always empirically tested them (told my partner to say a specific sentence, or to speak a specific word at an indicated time).  So far the tests seem to have confirmed the subjective experience, so either the illusion is extremely convincing or I've managed to successfully induce delusions of telepathic grandeur.

The experiences are completely spontaneous, however--I can't force their occurrence nor does it happen every trip.  I have to have a prior connection with the partner and I need to be face-to-face.

Here is the ENORMOUS diff between OC and the mystics: if I say I can do something, I can do it on any day of the week and in front of 1 or 1000 witnesses under bright lights and cameras.

The mystic can only do it in low light with a few like-minded and easily-fooled people.

FYI, no paranormalist has ever even passed their own self-designed pretest for the Randi Millions and almost all of the testees were sincere and were certain they had special abilities.

Despite popular misconceptions, prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas. :nonono:

However, it is perfectly legal to blow $150 on dinner, another $180 on a show and then a thousand on gambling and then even more on drinks and cover charge at the Ghost Bar in the Palms with a date and still not get laid. Not saying that ever happened to me or anything...

Define Paranormal: Beyond the range of normal experience or scientific explanation
(American Heritage Dictionary)

This does not necessarily mean "magical".

What is normal experience, what is the realm of science, and what is explainable?

Normal is an illusion of social bias, and what is explainable is similarly limited by language. Finally, science is limited to observable causality; or pragmatically speaking, is driven and conceived in terms of what we can find useful.

There are aspects of reality that are and probably always will be beyond human understanding. We can study reality, but we should not deceive ourselves into thinking anything is normal, or that we could understand it in totality.

Chronic said it more succinctly
Quote:
believeing or believing in not believing, its all belief
all belief is distortion of what actually is.
