the headless shroom....

this may be a stupid question, but what the hell....

when you decapitate a shroom for a spore print, will the stem continue to grow if left attached to the cake?

I've only left stems headless for relatively short periods of time, but I have observed no growth in that time either, so I would think probably not and if it did, it would grow very little.

thats what i figured.... but in alot of the pics i see on here there are headless shrooms, mixed in with the rest of the flush, no doubt due to a print being taken.....i was just wondering if they were left for a reason.....

I've never tried but I assume so. I mean the stem is the base and the "root" system connected to the casing or cake. The Cap is just a reproductive like object. If you cut off my dick I'm still live, but I'll be pretty pissed off. If fact, I'd say, if you cut off the cap it will live, but you might not. Atleast if it was my cap, I would kill you.

when the cap opens, the mushroom has matured. you dont grow after you mature. so of course the stem will not grow any taller, it's already an "adult"

Interesting.  It's true that it has reached it's maturity but it may regrow the cap to reproduce.  Plants do it, worms do it, lizards do it.  Lots of things do it! :grin:
