ive been growing PF tek style in pop bottles for about 2 years now. anyways ive seen lots of dealer shrooms floating around and theres are always bone dry. i mean dry, like there rock hard. i air dry mine with a fan and use dessicant. and mine are kinda dry like i can snap the stem and it breaks into 2 pieces. but nowhere near as dry as the commercial shrooms dealers sell. my question is why??? im getting a ronco food dehydrator and hoping that will dry them more. cause friends of mine take 2 grams of the dealers shrooms and get totally fucked up on em, then they take mine and mine arent as strong, so im thinking since mine arent dry theres water in them which adds weight when you scale it out. and mine are fresh picked days ago and i pick them before the veil breaks like your supposed to. does anybody know the EXACT time your supposed to pick them. i grow equador, tapalpa (mexican cubensis) and sometimes matias romero.

Maybe your not using enough dessicant for your chamber. Do you open it often? They've always been dry as can be for my using fan then dessicant chamber. As for when to pick them, it's usually considered that they stop producing active compounds after the veil breaks, as they prepare to drop spores. That's why people usually pick at that time, as you get the most potency per gram.

I noticed after 24 hours of fan drying just isn't enough. I go for 48 hours, and then put it in a dessicant chamber. What I noticed is that after I put 24 hour fan dried mushrooms into a dessicant chamber, it draws extra water from inside of the mushie, and then it's moist again. I guess 24 hours is good enough, but then you gotta pull them out a day later and then fan dry again.

ya ive noticed the same thing if you put fan dried shrooms in a dessicant chamber they get moist again, sometimes really moist. i fan dry mine for several days usually 2-3. just got a used dehumidifier from a friend, im testing it ou by drying some sliced apples. it seems to get somewhat hot in there, must be a heating element or something. its a "gusto" food dehydrator. ive heard of others using dehydrators with heat in them. dont know the exact temp but would this affect potency at all???

When you fan dry. If the air....... the fan blows........... is a little humid. Like the ambiant rh of that room. The shrooms will get no drier than that air.
A fan in a bone ass dry warm place........ will get them BONE ASS DRY. 6T

yeah ive actually had some trouble with that too...my first flush was straight cakes crumbled with no casing layer..the biggest fruit was about 3.5 grams wet...these mushies dried quickly ...but now i made a casing with 50/50+ and my biggest fruit was 18 grams wet...big difference and they are takin forever to dry...im just leaving them out in a cookie sheet .....i think i need to do something else...where can you find dessicant and exactly what is it?

The MMGG calls for Damp Rid or Damp Gpne. You can buy Damp Rid at W-mart in the chemical section with cleaning supplies.
Does anybody use this stuff? Is it safe?

High,
Odd story,
I fan also, 24-48 hrs. Then put them in my cooler along with the drying stuff.
They are always crunchy. The drying container should be well locked.
When the container leaks air my shrooms are doomed.
Recently I did some fresh havested direct in the cooler(in dry box) and it all worked out too.
I use a great amount of decsenant !

After taking them out of the dessicant chamber, grind them with a coffee grinder, and then expose them again to fresh dessicant. Or, go ahead and put them in capsules, and put the capsules in a bag with some dessicant.....good luck

Have you tried sun -drying, I just stick mine on a cookie sheet on top of a de humidifier in a closet, the heat produced by the de-humidifier and the dry air work together to get them suckers drie as hell. when they are done drying put them in a qaurt jar with crushed, but not powdered saltine crackers, that ensures they dont soak up any moisture, and also if theres a lil still in there the crackers soak it up, you can use what you want, goldfish crackers, pretzils, use stale ones, wont bother nothin

what's the big deal? I pick my shrooms and stick them in a small rubbermaid with a window screen style mesh a few inches over top of some dessicant and my mushies take a little while to dry but they are DENSE DRY ROCK HARD little puppies. Do nothing else, it works excellently.

So its possible to just put them straight into the dessicent chamber and they will still fully dry but just take longer? I wont have access to fan drying so this is my only way.

How long are you leaving them in the chamber? Are you refreshing your dessicant? I use a big tapered tupperware bowl with tight-sealing lid. Small round wire rack cut to fit about 1" above bottom of bowl. I lay 2 paper towels (criss-crossed) on that, and pour a mound of dessicant on top of the paper towels. I level it out somewhat, to cover as much surface area of the paper towels as possible, without falling off the edges and into the bottom of the bowl. Then I have a larger round wire rack cut to sit about 1" above the smaller rack. I put my shroomies on there, and leave them in there until they are to be used. I even put a small piece of paper towel on the top rack and throw teeny aborts on there, so they don't fall thru the rack into the dessicant. Every half day or so, I pull the top rack out, lay out 2 more paper towels, pick up the two old towels (still covered with dessicant) and pour the dessicant from the old towels to the new. The old towels will be wet - they pull the moisture from the dessicant and help it last longer. I snag any wet used-up looking clumps of dessicant out of the pile, add more (if needed) and put the new paper towels covered with dessicant in place of the old. Return the top rack, and continue to dry. When they are completely dry (can take up to 2 days, depending on how long I fan dried), I place them in baggies and leave the ziplock in the chamber, with the ziplock half open so they are still exposed to the dessicant.
My babies are always BONE DRY with this method, and I live in a VERY humid place. I fan dry anywhere from 24 to 48 hours prior to dessicant, and always have bone dry in 48 hours or less after placing in chamber.
What has helped me the most is the paper towels. You can easily see whether your towels need to be changed, because they will be wet around the edges of your dessicant mound. I go thru WAY less dessicant this way, which is great. Every time I've tried to re-use dessicant, it was more trouble than it was worth. A box of damp rid lasts me weeks now.
Be sure your chamber is airtight - if not, you're screwed.

Epsom salts, found in pharmacy sections at Walmart, Walgreens, Osco, etc. are cheap and reuseable as a dessicant. Use in place of damp-rid in the drying chamber, and when the salts become saturated, spread out on a cookie sheet and bake until dry. I use the same box of epsom salt indefinately. Might make no difference, but I prefer no chemicals near my mushie friends.

Yep epsom salts work perfectly, are cheap, and reuseable. You do have to dry it out before using it too though, not just after using it. I throw mine in the micowave for 5-10 minutes. Turns into a pure whitle hard cake, just smash that up, and use as a dessicant.

You seem to know your shit. Will you tell me how to construct a terrium for a few pf cakes. How to vent and keep it wet. I have one fully colonized jar of golden teacher im about to fruit. I have a large plastic box with a snap on lid I bought from wal mart. I think it will work I just need to know what to do with it.
