I don't have time to read that, but the title confuses me... How can one argue in favor of something which arises independent of all conditions? It's not like you can say, "Look, you should be cultivating unconditional love"...because that love would be based upon the condition of cultivating it. So unconditional love either is, or is not, moment to moment, IMO.

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Re: The Argument for Unconditional Love - just press pause. [Re: Lion]

you could say that the flapping of a butterfly's wings in patagonia affects the weather in Moscow.

cause and effect diffuse through chaos and complexity less directly than pratiyekka samabhava - (law of cause and effect in buddhist cannon) and even less directly than newtonian analysis.

but one thing is not working well in this analysis.

associative mentation does work by linkages, and the linkages are made from past experiences, and many reflexes and reactions are elicited from this, while many more are elicited out of chaos such as the butterfly's effect on weather.

still the thing that is left out is mental state shifting. During the apprehension of beauty, for instance, (assuming a person gives themselves the opportunity to be so inspired by "relaxing") a state shift will occur, and more layers will be allowed to accrue without reflex reacting.

the person has the ability in this state to shift from his course of "karmic" reactivity, and may have an honest reaction from something "deeper", more abstract, more chaotically derived, or more generic than from his conditioning alone.

some might argue that this reaction is merely the collusion of all conditioning acting in concert, like the chaos theory which includes the effect of a butterfly's wing flap on the weather in Moscow.

I do not particularly mind that interpretation at all.

at least is is not a fixed linear equation, nor an attempt to logicify that which is clearly more complex than action reaction style conditioning.

yea the title i guess can be misleading.... i interpreted the entire argument as an attempt to argue that we are not only morally obligated to love everyone unconditionally, as many religions suggest that we do, but we are logically inclined to do so.

My assumption is that this argument is some how flawed but regardless it did make me rethink my reasons for doing things. It may acutally have convinced me that I am logically inclined to find love in everyone and everything in order to truly love myself. And I have just recently discovered that loving myself is the key to happiness (at least for me)

Logic has always been my system for rationalizing different aspects of life. And for me religion has never given me sufficient reason to follow its teachings since its basis was on simply faith and i've been lied to too many times in my life to still have faith in something based on the word of someone I really don't even know. But now in retrospect I ended up coming to the same conclusion of most religions by reading this article, but without the idea of just doing it cause have faith, I now truly believe that this is the most logical way for me to be, regardless of if god exists.

Therefore if one claims to not love something, then he could potentially be claiming to not love a part of himself that he does in fact love, since it is possible that the life experience that this not loved thing is a part of could be integral to the part of himself that he loves.

Rather than the term "love" here I would substitute "accept", for claritys sake.

So I agree.

Unconditional love is actually becoming love, not feeling love as a passing emotion.

Acceptance & awareness are the easiest most simple ways to love, simply accept something and you are not resisting it, then you can understand it with clarity & awareness instead of mental attachments/resistance.
