Morality?

I was approached by some happy looking christian fellow the other day on the way to college who stopped me to give me a booklet about morallity...

Basically the booklet was going on about *insert prophets name here* (to make this discussion not just about christianity) words of wisdom, and how we're all going to hell unless we convert.

Well, the first part I can agree with. Morality definitely has a place in the world... I do agree that society is not what it once was (in a sense of community, values and safety), and I guess this can be somewhat attributed to the decline of morality in western society.. however maybe this is not decline per say, but evolution instead?

One of my friends also mentioned This, about the pope publishing a revised, 'modern', seven deadly sins to include the 'plagues' of modern society.

I also got into a discussion (we argue about random shit cause we have too much free time) about whether morality is intrinsic to existence.. do we learn morals or are they built in? I mean everyone has a concept of what is right and what is wrong.. but was this *insert prophets name here* guy the first person to think of it?

Another thought; what came first.. did religion evolve out of morality or is it vice versa? These 2 concepts are inextricably linked..

What is the general consensus about these thoughts?

(This is an attempt at an actual discussion, not 'leik lolz who banz yu0z the most from tah interwebz' or 'dude the shr00mery l00kz weirdz :O').

I like this... shows how forgiving christians are supposed to be

The original offences and their punishments
Pride- Broken on the wheel
Envy- Put in freezing water
Gluttony- Forced to eat rats, toads, and snakes
Lust- Smothered in fire and brimstone
Anger- Dismembered alive
Greed- Put in cauldrons of boiling oil
Sloth- Thrown in snake pits
