Notapillow… do you belong to a religion that opposes the ideas of people who do not maintain a specified weight range? I was just curious because you keep referring to this fellow’s ideas as being somehow not worthy of discussion or consideration followed by references to his being a “fat ass”.
You seem to be claiming this person is bigoted against people who subscribe to the religious ethos yet you make pointed remarks about the shape of his body. Kinda silly and ironic in my opinion.
Personally I think the preponderance of all human thought could be classified as delusional and the only cure will come in the form of giant rocks from outer space (radically accept the cosmic serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Our erroneous affirmations are temporary... just as our most intellectually ingenuous ideas.

I'm a fat bastard too, 300lbs and counting
But I agree with you, his obesity has nothing to do with it and the mention of it is uncalled for.

untrue... He may be trying to sway people to his belief, but he is not forcing 'magical thinking'. In fact, he is trying to help them STOP thinking magically.

magic thinking =

Quote:

Magical thinking is a kind of non-scientific causal reasoning. Scholars like James George Frazer and Bronislaw K. Malinowski emphasized that magic is more like science than religion, and that societies with magical beliefs often had separate religious beliefs and practices. Like science, magic is concerned with causal relations, but unlike science, magic often attributes correlation to causation. For example, someone may believe a shirt is lucky if he had won a bowling competition in it. He will continue to wear the shirt to bowling competitions, and though he continues to win some and lose some, he will chalk up every win to his lucky shirt.

Another form of magical thinking occurs when people believe that words can directly affect the world. This can mean avoiding talking about certain subjects ("speak of the devil and he'll appear"), using euphemisms instead of certain words, or believing that to know the "true name" of something gives one power over it, or that certain chants, prayers or mystical phrases will change things.

:rotfl:

Thinking the word, or speaking the word, changes you, and hearing the word changes the othedr. How exactly is the world not affected by the word? It will never be the same again because the word has been spoken.

Right! Because Japanese Kamikazes were doing it for the girls!

Or does nationalism count as a religion?

This is actually hilarious in light of your later definition of magical thinking, specifically that saying chants or words can change your world.

Go to the Self-Help section of your local Barnes & Noble or Borders when you get a chance and take a look at how many books tell you that just saying "3 simple words" or "7 golden rules" or "2 phrases to live by" will change your whole world. The vast majority of these have nothing to do with any religion.

Or can most philosophy be classified as "magical thinking"?

Quote:

Except that morality is relative. The entire debate surrounding socialism is pure morality. Some believe that property rights should win, others believe that equal distribution of goods is a better goal. Neither has anything to do with religion, and both sides have infiltrated politics and tried to force their morality on others.

Or are you going to go so far as to classify socialism as a religion?

So basically you're saying that Japanese Kamikazes were atheists and were flying their planes into American warships because they hated American religion? Even if one tenth of these kamikazes were atheists they weren't flying their planes into ships because they hated (insert religion here).
And no, it's not "nationalism". It's something that has been entrenched in their military culture since the times of the samurai warrior.
Your attempt to turn kamikaze pilots into atheist suicide warriors is about as asinine as Bush's attempt to tie Iraq to the war on terror.

You are!
Ever hear of meet at the flagpole? etc?

Kids are allowed to have prayer, so long as they dont disrupt the lives of others, that reminds me of a humble man, that wouldnt force people  into things, Jesus, thats him!

On a similar note....
I cant belive christians often act as if the world is against them, if you live in a rich , stable country, then chances are, your oppression is composed of straw men.  :smirk:

The same is true for pretty much any form of moderate-radical religion. If you're not "with" them, you're against them.

Well I have to disagree, most western religons dont carry great thinkers and philosophers, and if they do, please explain who they are, because unless you are talking about the fact that some inventors and founding fathers of America were religious, then I dont see what you are talking about, unless of course you are talking about eastern religion, then there are plenty of philosophers that were interested in some of the ideas of major relgions.

So you're saying Milton was an idiot?

Dude, do you get paid everytime you use the phrase "staw men"? I swear I've seen you write that at least four times in the last couple days.

But yeah, it is crazy the way dominant majority groups balk at any challenge to their supremacy. Look at pale-faces claiming "reverse-racism" all over the 90s and though more discreetly, even today.

It's also a bit of a generalization to lump all Christians together. There's a lot of them, and amazingly some are quite exceptional people (as their belief system would require). Fuck 99.9% of fundamentalists though. Fuck them in their dirty literal asses.
