The Aucklandii are not 'gold tops'

"Gold Tops" is an epithet for Psilocybe cubensis and Psilocybe subcubensis, common along the 'Gold Coast' and throughout Queensland and parts of South Australia.

The image is from my book Magic Mushrooms of Australia and New Zealand posted at erowid.org

What Island did you find the aucklandii on The North or the South?

By the way, Psilocybe cubensis (Gold tops) do not occur in New Zealand unless someone is growing them indoors in their basements or closets.

Here are some Goldcap pictures that I took a few months ago from here in florida. These are the ones that I havent posted up at the shroomery before because they arent the best examples. But they Are genuine gulf coast strain p cubes. Rumur has it that northflorida is finding large amounts of fungus growing in the field, not a drop of rain in my town though. The last picture is what a fully mature giant cubensis looks like when the bugs have have had a couple days to eat away at it.

Cool pics, GGreatOne234.

Jalien,

I forgot to mention that their ae 8 psychoactive species in New Zealand and the law has only made two psilocybine mushrooms illegal : Psilocybe cubensis (Earle) Singer and Psilocybe mexicana Heim,.

Unfortunately for law enforcement officials in New Zealand, Neither of these species grow there.

Hehehe, But 8 others do.

Hehehe.

well fair enough if they are not formally speaking "goldtops" but it is the only name i have heard used to describe them locally

the only other colloquial name for shrooms i have heard around auckland is "blue meanies", but this usually refers to Copelandia cyanescens, no?

a local book "the blue meanie & the she devil" pictures c.cyanescens

if the meanie epithet is sometimes used to describe p.cyanescens i can understand how confusion could arise as they look and behave very similarly to p.aucklandii

the ones i find, in auckland public bark gardens, look exactly like these when young

(nz p.subaeruginosa pic provided by sean1234)

but often have that wavy cap look when older

species differentiation
huh?

PS: i assure you "some" p.cubensis are grown in nz

PiSs: it seems the police will prosecute for possession of any psilocybin species, though i have only a handful of stories, not hard data

. . . i have been thinking about this

could it be that the ones i find in the city are the above species p.subaeruginosa or p.australiana since they are so similar to p.cyanescens?

i assumed they were p.aucklandii as i was told the woodchips for bark gardens come from Riverhead Forest, just north of auckland, where the little ones dwell under pine

i have collected and sampled aucklandii which characteristically turn black within 1/2 hour of picking and have stunned me with their potency

the local ones stain blue easily enough, but do not turn black, which i assumed was due to differing environmental conditions

but now i am not sure. . .

Hi again,

That picture from Sean is from Clive Shirley at http://hiddenforest.co.nz

It is as you say Psilocybe subaeruginosa.

Blue meanies are of course Copelandia cyanescens and they do not resemble P. aucklandii or P. australiana.. The P. australiana and P. aucklandii are wood chip mushrooms and P. subaeruginosa is a wood chip mushroom buut has also been observed in manured soil.

Copelandia cyanescens on the other hand, grows profusely in manure of four-legged ruminants.

I am interested in a copy of that book you mentioned about the blue meanies..

I would be willing to trade one of my six books at my website for a copy of this book.

Can you help,

mj

i am now in a state of confusion about which shroom is found where in auckland

well, except for these

for example, i have been informed by several sources that shrooms grow on nearby waiheke island, but there is no reference in the literature

with any luck there will be more psilocybes to be found than ever if my spore spraying project proves fruitful this season

thanks very much for the link above:
i know where i can go for subaeruginosa now!

"The blue meanie & the she devil" is a novella about a first trip
it was launched at a rave last year (great party complete with dancing shrooms and hot babes)
i can get another copy so sure i'll swap
. . . just give me the link to your books and we can arrange it by email

Hi Jalien,im also picking and eating the Psilocybe Aucklandii and are also stunned by the potency. Can you or someone compare the potency of these to others around the world. Can you grow Aucklandii indoors?and if you can what kind of cake/method is required? Does Aucklandii grow outside NZ under another name or is it from here?or maybe sold in the US spore shops?
Thanks for any help
zippin

Hi,

Psilocybe aucklandii is also found in Australia. IT is closely related to P. cyanescens, P, tasmainiana, P. eucalypta and P. aeruginosa.

It does not occur anywhere else.

have a shroomy day.

zippin: looks like your the first fellow auckander ive found on the BB!
(though i did talk to one in the chat rooms a couple of times)

where do you get your aucklandii from: riverhead, woodhill? (if you are shy you can leave me a private message)

i reckon p.aucklandii must be close to the most potent mushroom in the world as in my experience it turns black after being picked, which i have not heard of happening even with other bluing varieties (doubters: please prove me wrong with your pics!)

guess we're lucky, huh?

how has the season been for you so far?

mj: from your info went to the south auckand parks p.subaeruginosa are found in
in one park spotted lots of shrooms but no p.var
in the other found the spot: 5 schoolboys were combing the patch, but still managed to spot a few small specimans:
very much like those growing near my house. .

Hi Jalien, yes i pick them from riverhead but the season has been slow for me so far,how about you ?riverhead or woodhill?ive never picked at woodhill before.Have you noticed how much they have cut out of riverhead forest lately?I think that Aucklandii is very potnet and would be interesting to compare with american shroomers.Any ideas on growing them though out the off season?
thanks
zippin
