although I've never picked them, I'd say that looks like and aucklandii you've got there.. it does look similar to other specimens I've seen in photos, and the habitat/substrate sounds correct..

where are you located? Did you find this in Auckland?

Hi Inski
That certainly looks like Aucklandii to me. It's remarkable how the mushrooms seem to seek you out! The first possible Aucklandii sighting away from a certain forest that I'm aware of happens to be on your property no less! Awesome. I've spent a fair amount of time trying to find them in other places to no avail over the last, god, 16 years?
Hope you can get some microscopic ID perhaps to be a little more certain... but at least macroscopically it sure looks familiar!
Does it have that slightly more brittle nature than a sub?

Hello deadhorse,
It is macroscopically very similar to Psilocybe aucklandii specimens found in said forest!
I never suspected to find it anywhere else although I have read of finds in the Waitakere ranges and a few other locations, I was unable to find much solid proof of these finds!
I hope to find some more specimens from this location soon and do some microscopy for further id.
This specimen was definitely a bit more brittle than Psilocybe subaeruginosa.
Here's hoping more fruits will show themselves!

Hi haunted,
Yes this specimen was found in Auckland, you may remember a small cultivation experiment I was attempting with this species, this find has nothing to do with that experiment which I'm still working on, I can't find anything that the cloned culture I have will colonize apart from various grains!

Real nice find inski

I still find it odd that Ps. aucklandii seems to exclusively associate with pinus radiata. Doesn't make a compelling argument for it being a native. Perhaps it does grow in other habitats but has only been found in pines...any reported collections from non-pine anyone?

I have thought about this quite a lot,
According to Johnston and Buchanan's article on the species it is supposed to be common on soil and litter in native bush and pine forest, the list of finds includes a few different locations, some not in pine forest!
Hmm, pasturised pine debris:)

good job!!

You found them growing from decomposing ponga fern I'm guessing from the photos? That is interesting..

They look like they are macroscopically within the scope of ps aucklandii. Do you still think they are inski?

Hi haunted,
I could see the bluing mycelium on pine needles and other decomposed leaf litter, I think it's likely that these are Psilocybe aucklandii, macroscopically they are very similar, I plan to get my scope out tomorrow and take a closer look!
inski.

Awesome finds bro, and cheers for sharing.
They still look closest to aucklandii to me; having said that it would surprise me if there weren't more undiscovered species out there, and this could well be one of them.
Only question's gonna be which of all the new mushrooms you're finding is gonna be named after you??!!

The first pics look exactly like what I'd expect to find when I go Aucklandii hunting. Congrats on the surprise find! Guess that means they're coming up now and I really should get off my arse and do some hunting.

Thanks CureCat:cool:
Such a dark shade of blue compared to other bluing species, I wonder if this has something to do with differing ratios of the alkaloids, psilocybin, psilocin and baeocystin!?
I'd also like to mention the strong smell of these specimens which was exactly like Psilocybe aucklandii.
I guess there's a chance that the spores that created this fruiting could have come from my previous finds of P. aucklandii, they would have had to float out the window, down into the bush about 50 meters and land in a habitat suitable for growth, also the only pine tree on the property is only another 20 meters down the hill!
What are the odds of that happening?
inski.

I'd say that it's possible. But I think that it's far more likely that there are infact P. aucklandii in many more locations than one would expect (and of any psilocybe sp. for that matter) you just tend to find them more closer to home.

Ever noticed how taking a wizz is a good way to find shrooms? When you stop in one spot for a moment all of a sudden everything you couldn't see from normal speed wanderings becomes visible.
