Yeah, I think it's hard to tell from the photos but to me it looks like the bluing you get with p.aucklandii, which have some amazing streaks and spotting of the dark blue kind that isn't actually rot. But your right, a couple of them are probably in the category of rot inflicted. Especially that small pin in one the pics. It's just not consistently cold enough in Sydney to really support them very well.
Still, no complaints from me, I'm just lucky that I don't have to hunt for them, they find me!
...really lucky in fact, when you consider how rare they seem to be around Sydney city. Can't find much info about where to find them, and I was just thinking at the time I spotted them, if the weather is anything like this in Auckland (where I used to live) it's the perfect weather for them. They'll be growing like mad over there now.

It must be the weather I reckon. They are probably growing all over the place, perhaps just as mycelial masses, and then every so often, every few years, the weather permits them to rear their beautiful heads.

Found a MASSIVE crop of subs today, literally thousands of the little buggers Found on a giant wood-mulch bed on a long slope, near to a water catchment area. Never found so many subs before!

Well fuck me ... well done. Better dry 'em good so you don't lose any to mold, you'll still be digging into them next year!
You had better luck than me, the little patch near me was stomped on by kids or anal parents.

after a several year hiatus from hunting, i decided to get out there yesterday.
it was a late season hunt inspired by lots of rain, cold weather and mushroom related dreams.
driving up the mountains, there was a deep frost, which made me sceptical of our chances of finding anything. however, we were somewhat successful, we didn't spot a huge number, but enough to make our trip worthwhile. interestingly, the ones we did find were fairly frozen from the frost. and spots which had been fruitful in the past were fairly empty. also, there was a larger proportion to be found growing amongst grass, and more mature specimens which hardly bruised growing amongst eucalypts.
having gotten up quite early for the trip to the mountains, we returned before lunchtime. there was plenty of time to explore a couple of sites in sydney for which i had a hunch there would be some success (due to the unusual cold and wet weather we have been experiencing lately). the area chosen was plentiful with woodchips, however relatively new woodchips had been dropped here, which were less decomposed and so seemed to absorb moisture less effectively. i find such areas to be fairly unfruitful for mushrooms. nethertheless, peeking underneath some shrubbery, where the chips were very damp, i spotted 3 or 4 decent subs. i also found a solitary sub growing from some other chips out in the open nearby.
we headed to a natural bushland area with a track nearby. walking off the main track and along-side a small creek, we found about 10 solitary subs here and there. i also spotted a fairly large a mature sub which had fairly distinct blue veins down its stem, but was also rotten.
what was most interesting, was that the subs i found in sydney (especially those found in bushland) were of completely different appearance to those found in the mountains. those from the mountains tend to be short, thick-stemmed and very strong looking (solid moisture filled caps), while those from sydney tended to be delicate, with long, thin stems, and caps which opened up quite early in maturity. the sydney mushrooms also had very little sign of blue bruising, while the hardy mountain mushies bruised a deep blue very very easily. i would assume that the mushrooms found in the mountains were much more potent than those found in sydney.
my guess for such striking differences would be environment. the mushrooms found in the mountains were feeding off moist woodchips full of easy-access nutrients, while those i found in sydney were feeding off damp eucalypt mulch. the long stems could be explained by the fact they were growing in a fairly rainforest-like canopy, and so the mushrooms were "reading for the sunlight"? just some food for thought. sporeprints were identical in colour.
happy hunting.

yep .. right on the button there masterxenn , weather is alternating between rainy and on the cool side allright (snow to sea level in South island) and then fine breezy and warmish ..

Went on a hunt today because there's no more rain forecast for about a week...
The old spots were doing nicely and i found a few new ones so it was a good hunt.
Lots of big, fat, short mountain subs...

Nice, that is one nice big fat sub. Too dry and warm for city subs lately, so I'm on dried ones for now. Got no car since I moved here. Makes getting to the mountains difficult.
Anyway ,enjoy the haul.
