How much of beauty is relative?
I'm about to get an old volvo pretty soon and I think it is the coolest thing in the world. This got me thinking though, if I was some rich little kid, I would think this thing was a piece of shit.
Now, I can understand this very easily if a comparison is made between two people, all of us have different ideas of what is beautiful. In the context of one individual though, this seems very confusing to me. My idea of what is beautiful could easily change overnight depending upon my income.

One of the courses I am taking is in religion, here is the description:
Explores key problems in religious thought: nature of the Absolute, origin of time and the world, paradox of transcendence and immanence, role of teachers, sages, and prophets, language and negative theology, reason and the path to realization.
One of the first discussions we had was about what Beauty was. Beauty is subjective really...what I think of is beautiful may not be beautiful to you. But, when someone talks about something that is beautiful, we know exactly what they mean. Beauty is something deeper than subjectivity. There's a feeling that we all feel when we acknowledge something as beautiful...to me, that is beauty. There is beauty in symmetry and pattern, but as well as 'pure' things, like color. This leads me to believe that there is a beauty to unity. Beauty is the feeling that runs concurrent through all of us, and I like to connect this to the One that runs through us all, the Tao that runs through us all. Beauty is what ties us together...to me, Beauty = One = Being essentially. I really like Plotinus' view on this, in the Enneads.

beauty as a concept is always objective, no? we can't exclude people from thought, but we try thats for damn sure
take art for the form of religion
hold a concept as long as your neighbor, that's about all we can do to compare subjective ideas so why not, say to the hell with it and objectify beauty into each other and discover our subjective faults and enjoy gods real beauty!
goddamn you're beautiful man
