Jumping him with a knife would have got you assault charges even if you had one. attacking him prob. would have made him run off and flee the scene faster, If that was one cop it would have waited for back-up and just followed the guy around unless he had a tazer. If you had a cellphone you could have his location sent to a dispatcher thru 911
and follow the guy around all day. Most places wont mess with theft under 20 bucks cuz its petty. The punch to the old guy was wrong, And
If he continued the beating I would have jumped him then, while he was crouched over the old guy not paying attention, Try to knock his arse out with a jump kick to the head. You did good considering any actions
would prob. be considered unnecessary violence.

dude.. if you're getting the cops involved.. you don't want to have anything to do with hurting any body. even though he broke the law, the fucking law still says that since you don't have a badge, if you do something to him and he gets hurt, you go to jail instead or with him.

I feel pretty strongly about the excessive force used by the cops as well - nothing good can come of it. You could mention it by I'm not sure if you would have to testify for something to be done; in that case you would lose hands down: you against a bunch of cops.

Perp just punched the guy once and was done with it, right? It wasn't like he was beating him to the point where his life was in danger. That is when you need to consider getting involved. If he just clocks the guy and starts walking away then its completely unnecessary to put yourself in direct danger. The guy was huge and would've probably deliver some serious pain to you. Calling the cops was the best thing to do and it was ballsy of you to follow him around. If you had just run up and gotten your ass beat, that guy probably would have gotten away.

First I would have beat the shit out of the perp. Then, when the cops got there I would have kicked all their asses. Then I would have kicked that old fucker's head in.

One time on my sales route I was talking to a convinience store clerk and this guy was opening up the cooler doors and stuff and the clerk stops talking to me, walks right over to the guy and was like "can I help you sir" in an indian accent. Perp was like " you got 30 packs? Im looking for thirty packs" clerk says"no i dont have, please leave" and then procedes to tell me that the guy is a repeat grab and run offender. So im thinking, shit, he's going to the gas station across the street, who was also one of my customers. So I start booking ass to the other station and right as i step on the sidewalk, this guy comes running out with two thrity packs, one under each arm, and me and the indian manager are running after him, shouting obsinities. Anyway he gets away(I dont know how an overweight black middleaged man could outrun two lean men in their 20s-30s while he was carrying 60 beers, but he was bookin it). I always thought that a bullet to the head in the middle of a smash and grab might be the end of me. I recently got transfered out of the ghetto and into a nicer route. At least now I know which parts of town to avoid.
