i finally went to a farm and got some hpoo

So i went to a local horse stable and they were more then glad to get rid of their horse shit! Not only did they help me load some up, but they got mad when I wouldnt take more! They even tried to lend me extra tubs to take more, and advised me to dig down to the older stuff in the pile. Granted, i dont think they knew what I was doing, but none the less, I've got a new unlimited spawn source. So now that i've got my poo, I've got a couple spawning Qs.

When pasteurizing, how long do you do it for? I've read anything from 45 min to 120 min. What do you think (see poll)?

When spawning, i'm using a ~ 1:4 ratio, but what does that mean? Is that in volume? weight (hydrated or dry)?

How much do hydrated and dry hpoo weigh?
How much does it expand once hydrated?

I'm so excited to finally grow LARGE shroomies!
How long do YOU pasteurize for?

manure doesnt expand when hydrated just adds more weight to it.i do mine at 160-165f never go above 170f for about an hour and 30 mins 1:4 ratio means that you have 1 part spawn and 4 parts substrate

um....duh.
Thanks for the info on whether or not it expands, but what i meant by the ration question was: is it 1:4 by weight or by volume.

You could let it pasteurize for as long as you want - within limits - overnight is not excessive. If you do it in a cooler, your temp will stay high for a long time.

The ratio is by volume and is only a rough guide. I would never measure anything. What is more important is that your spawn is broken up down to the little grains and mixed into the poo thoroughly.

You need to be careful with "stable" manure . Most of it I've encountered wasn't worth a shit , no pun intended . Way too much sawdust and such .

The best comes from fields , not stables .

i would recommend going to a large dairy farm where the stable floors are 'squeegeed' clean. The floors are immaculate so if you get to it before the squeegees, it'll be free of sawdust and the likes. :smile: I'm in the Mid-West so i pretty much can find one of these places within 20 minutes in ANY direction :smile:

I'm not sure, but should you possibly be concerned with anti-biotics that are given to the livestock contaminating the poo?
