hpoo & mycilium ratios
    #5222298 -

I am building little bitty double tub FC and would like to know how much hpoo and mycilium I will need.

2x 12qt/1.14L rubbermaid tubs (14'x 9'x 5.5').

1. Is there a simple rule of thumb for ratios between tub size and how deep the hpoo should be?

2. Is there a simple ratio for a hpoo/mycilium mix for substrate?

I'm asking for rules of thumb rather than answers specific to the mentioned size because I will probably need different size FC's in the future.

Oops,

Forgot to inquire ratios on casing too!

Deeper substrate is better. Try for 3-4 inches I would guess.
1 to 4 ratio of spawn to substrate is great, 1 to 10 will work.

at 3.5 inches substrate, you will need a total of 6.5 quarts. So, how about 4 quarts poo, and 2 of spawn.
And shoot for about a half inch of casing, that is one quart.

(google does all of the conversions, ex the casing ammt: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=lang_en&safe=off&c2coff=1&q=14*9*.5+in%5E3+to+quarts )
Hope that helps!

Thanks for the answer Jaeger.

You mention "3-4inches of substrate is great". Do you think 3-4 inches would be acceptable in a 5.5 inch tub? Is having the 1 inch holes drilled so close to the rim of the tub going to cause any problems?

I just speak from what I read, and not experience. Hopefully someone will come by and correct me.
Maybe shoot for half of the measures I gave you. Also, on the holes, why not just fan the casing a couple times a day? Or do you plan on adding holes right at the casing level to do kind of a double tub?

Maybe a double tub would work very well for ya! Check out Wronguy's post. Then you could have the substrate depth for big flushes and the benefit of it taking care of itself.

Youll need some holes in your tub at the top of the casing layer for CO2 to escape if your substrate + casing layer is lying low in your tub

Yes, it is a double tub, and I planned on placing holes at the casing level ala Wronguy's post. Unfortuanally, Most of the posts/tek's I've found have been for a larger size of tub. I agree that using about half of the posted 3-4 inches of substrate should work. I hope that 1.5-2 inches will be deep enough.

It will probably be deep enough but most teks suggest deeper for bigger fruits.

Deeper substrate=Bigger fruits

I'm still a nub but for casings I used 2 quarts of pastuerized poo to spawn to 2 half-pint jars and it colonized in 7 days.

It doesn't really change at all for smaller tubs. If I were you I'd go for a 5 inch substrate depth if at all possible.

So far as spawn ratio goes, 1:4 or 1:5 is good and what you should aim for.

And your casing layer shouldn't be quite a half inch. The old teks recommend a casing layer that is 1/4th of your substrate depth, but in recent times, people have been recommending smaller sizes. More like 1/4th in for 5 in substrate, or 1/8th in for 3 inch.

Since you're doing a double tub, despite it being small, just follow the directions on hole placement. That will be enough for FAE, no fanning required.

I actually do more like 1:20 and it colonizes perfectly if you spread it out evenly enough and its fresh from pasteurization. I just sprinkle my casing layer on top after 4-5 days or so when i see a couple patches of mycealum

I suppose that's possible.. but most people will recommend a ratio more like 1:5, as it's more gauranteed to be successful, and quicker to colonize as well.

It sounds like 1:4 or 1:5 ratio for spawn to hpoo is a good thing. Is there such thing as too much spawn? It sounds like the more the better. Could you go as high as a 1:1 ratio?

Well you could, but at that point you kinda lose the point of spawning. You spawn to Hpoo or compost because they're better, more nutricious substrates that produce bigger, more potent mushies.

Well, you could without a problem but the whole point is to spawn to more mass to yield more mass, obviously if you only spawn to the colonized media's volume or weight you aren't going to produce as many mushrooms as if you have five times the food to give them
