It's gonna come out of his/her paycheck. WTF does the clerk's gender have to do with anything?

Generally, more empathy is felt for a female. Think when a young girl might get pulled over for speeding and just start bawling - she might get off the hook simply for that reason. If a guy would do the same, most would perceive this as just pathetic. Plus, considering this was asked as a personal question, and not a "would you rather offer help to a female or male" discussion - its a choice of personal ethics. I think for most populace, if it was some humble girl behind the counter, they'd be more reluctant to return the cash than if it was an assertive male who looks like he could hold up his own.

.-

As far as the question itself goes, itd really depend on not only my current financial situation, but my outlook on life on that day. I am currently well-off and leaving to Buenos Aires to travel in a couple weeks - so I am in high spirits - I would most likely return the cash. But was this 4 years ago, and especially when I was totally skint ... the outcome would probably have been otherwise.

Ethics, like [blind] justice, is impartial, it is, or 'ought' to be, a moral constant. Determining one's code of ethics based upon perception and emotion is not ethics at all, it is capricious mood. Females may be more given to tears, but many females know how to manipulate others by this and any savvy adult male knows this. Tough male personas are equally as transparent. The more macho a male is, the more undeveloped is his emotional life and insecure his self-esteem. Ethics seeks to deal with equanimity, transcending these superficialities, and, in the words of Ken Kesey, "cutting through the bullshit."

I'd lean towards keeping it, but it would depend on the store. I would definitly keep it if it were a walmart, but then I probably wouldn't be shopping there in the first place. I also doubt that most places would fire someone over that, although it could happen and it would really suck. The only reasons I'd feel obligated to bring it back would be if it was a small store that was struggling, or if the clerk would suffer really shitty repercussions for it. But then I don't know if that would really happen. None of the jobs I've ever had would do much much that a stern reprimand.

Once I gave someone like $18 change from a $20, on a $16 purchase... so it would have been a $2 purchase instead. He gave me the money back and we laughed about it, then I commented on how interesting/wierd it is that most people are honest in such situations. It honestly wouldn't have even remotely effected me if he kept it; because of the way we do our cash our float is always fluctuating anyways.

I have worked in retail as a cashier and later in mgmt and would like to point out that for a $100 mistake the person would in most cases be fired, if they weren't fired it's possible it would come out of their paycheck. Don't know if it would influence anyone's decision or not.

Been there, done that.  Several times, in fact.  I call situations like that "character tests," and they are graded on a pass/fail basis.
.
I have and would bring back the excess $.  Whether the clerk would be "punished" or not, or whether they were an innie or an outie (:)) has been and would be irrelevant.  Whether I could be caught and punished would be irrelevant.
.
What counts for me is whether I am being the person I want to be when I grow up.  That standard is what I hold myself to, and all that truly matters to me when ethical decisions are involved.

 @ the innie vs outie....!
I just threw that out there to see how others would respond....

OK, now would it justify the ethicalness () if I had lost something with a related value to Walmart....?
.... .Like it would be financially balanced out by keeping the cash....
(this is not the case, but hypothetically of course)

If they did have to fire a cashier due to discrepancies, it does effect the store as a whole, and costs the store more money. The hiring process, loss of ability to most effectively facilliate the customer's consumerism...

Now, if she did lose her job over this, and if it was decided to give the money back,
what % chance does she have of getting her job back....?
My thought is that if she has gotten fired, she would not be hired back even if it was cleared -
that is  --->  **IF**   she already had previous "demerits"....
ie, so they would still be hiring a new person anyways....

I would definitely take it back.  But how i brought it back would depend on a couple of things.  If it seemed an honest mistake and the clerk was trying to do a good job I would try to return it to that clerk and keep it quiet.
.
If it was some idiot or teenager too busy gossiping with girlfriends instead of doing their job I would probably go to the Head Cashier or manager.
.
When these situations happen I have always felt like it was some karmic test and I want to get an A!  :yesnod:

If I just returned it to the clerk quietly and the transaction was caught on camera, that would be a bad place to be....

And the woman was very VERY talkative - to everyone that was in that line....!
She was upper middle age, and she did say that she had just woken up and came right to work, so she was tired....
Which might explain how she made the mistake....

$110, absolutely free and clear....  You ssssuuuuurrrrre that you would pass it up.....?  :smirk:

Absolutely sure.  Once when I was making a night deposit when I reached up to get an envelope I found someone's deposit in that slot!  It was ALOT of money.  I was very low on funds at the time so I knew better than to count it.  Before I could change my mind I put the deposit in the correct spot, made my deposit and drove away hoping I had helped someone a little bit.

Don't tell that story to too many people bc most look at me like I am crazy. But I managed to get by without that money.  Might have been someone's mortgage or something.  :plur:

The gender was a question for discussion, I didn't say it made a difference for me....

Congrats on your current standings....
If you lost what you have now financially - to back 4 years ago, but present day....
Having been there and beyond, do you think that your maturity/experience would play a role in your decision - to keep or give back the $$....?

For me, whether or not the person gets punished, has/had no bearing on the decision that was made as soon as $$ was discovered and realized....
But, now that it will be 5 days since the event happened (I went on vacation), the clerk would have most likely been fired by now....
Do you really think that taking the money back would make a difference in her current employment status....?
