Maybe its a matter of whether the person feels like its important or not.
If they cannot seem to find the answer in one place, maybe they think its useless to keep trying. So they go to the next, maybe it has something to do with patience as well.
But If you say it like, "if it doesnt work for me, than it just must not work for everybody else as well". Now thats a false statement, and cant really be proven. There are many factors that could keep one person from doing one thing, but just cause they cant doesnt mean someone else cant either.
Why people do THAT is beyond me, I guess they think they have figured everything out. They may just be a tad ahead of themselves .
Ive found that people like to justify their decisions, otherwise i think their whole choice would be rendered meaningless. Without some rhyme or reason to carry on, what would have been the point to do the said act in the first place?
Low feeligns of self worth may also be a contributor to the response to that "if it doesnt work for me, it must not work!".
All in all im sure there are a lot of different explanations and ideas that tie into the "psychology" and/or uncritical nature of the statement you just mentioned.

I didn't get the answer I wanted when I prayed. Therefore, prayer doesn't work.
now that's just silly about as silly as saying
"prayer worked for me, so it must work!"

How come when it works for some, those say, "It works for me, therefore it will work for everyone."
And for those it doesn't work, they say, "It doesn't work for me, therefore it doesn't work at all for anyone."
How come, for those it works, they don't simply say, "It works for me, sorry it doesn't work for you."
And for those it doesn't work, they don't simply say, "it doesn't work for me, but hey, that's great that it works for you."

I could take a roomful of couch potatoes and IF they followed some general principles reasonably well, ALL would make some measurable improvement in physical condition regardless of inherent ability.
Do you believe that you (or an instructor of your choice) could take a roomful of spiritual couch potatoes willing to follow your intructions and measurably improve their success at praying?

There is no "success" to praying. There is simply "praying". Talking to God in your own words.

I didn't get the answer I wanted when I prayed. Therefore, prayer doesn't work.
Valid point as a standalone statement, but what of the first ever study done on prayer where the entire nation (generically speaking) prayed for the longevity of the royal family in England for centuries and yet the royalty lived much shorter than average lives?
In one sense the same argument could apply, yet millions of people praying, some effectively and some ineffectively, should not have a negative effect now should it?

Then the shroomery (and S&P in particular) is the perfect place to test your methodology. I would bet that there would be many volunteers for the study as well as those willing to help set-up and monitor such a grand experiment.
I think we should do it.

Meditation didn't help me when I tried to meditate. Therefore, meditating doesn't work. Having gone to one of the premier and longest-lived meditative ashrams in the US following the lineage of a near-universally respected yogi (Yogananda); having immersed myself totally for three months with no distractions and have carried on for years afterwards on my own; I have concluded that there is little benefit to meditation for me (in accordance with your statement). However, I can also conclude that meditation does NOT benefit every student who sincerely applies themselves.

There is no "success" to praying. There is simply "praying". Talking to God in your own words. I believe that we are discussing two very different (real or imagined) types of prayer; devotional (the type that you describe) and intercessional (creating changes in the physical world).
