When Honesty Doesn't "PAY"............ . .. .
    #6961328 -

OK, hypothetical situation....

You go to a store that you hardly ever go to - just out of convenience, pick out a few items that total over $100, and you go check out....
You get to joking around with the cashier, and you pay with cash....
The cashier hands you the change, and off you go....
Upon arriving home, you notice that you got the change from the purchase,
AND the money that you handed the clerk to pay for the items, AND the receipt ("proving" your legal purchase), AND the merchandise....

Apparently, the clerk somehow put the change and the original cash in one hand, and hands it ALL back to you....

We all know (generally)what is right, and "what" is "wrong", and what is "honest"....
So, what do you do under those specific circumstances....

What happens to a clerk that comes up short on their register - to which you would prolly~ never see again in your life anyways....
Not that it matters that you won't see them again, I have to assume that the clerk will be punished for the mistake somehow....

Would it change your answer if you knew it was a man or a woman as the clerk....?

And absolutely no pun intended, but would it make a difference if the store was actually a Walmart....?

I am leaving for vacation, and I look forward to getting back to read what YOU would do in this situation....
Have a nice weekend.....!

i don't think if it was a man or woman would change anything for me, unless it was a Chick SO HOT that you had to see her again then I'd maybe go and take the money back lol

I'd probably keep the money if it was a walmart.

But it would suck if it's the cashier that gets fucked for it, i wouldn't mind if the company payed it back but it would be a shame to keep the money if the person that made the mistake loses money or their job. But then again they should be more careful, mistakes are made though.

Been there, done that. Several times, in fact. I call situations like that "character tests," and they are graded on a pass/fail basis.

I have and would bring back the excess $. Whether the clerk would be "punished" or not, or whether they were an innie or an outie (:)) has been and would be irrelevant. Whether I could be caught and punished would be irrelevant.

What counts for me is whether I am being the person I want to be when I grow up. That standard is what I hold myself to, and all that truly matters to me when ethical decisions are involved.

it depends on your mind doesn't it

one could consider it a gift, that he was not meant to pay, or that he was meant to have an abundance of money

one could consider it an obligation to give the money back

i would likely give the money back.

For some reason I want to say that if I was at a small local 'mom and pop' type place I would be more inclined to give it back.  But Walmart??  They might be down 100$.  Like they would notice.

Innie/outie...  I love that.  Made me LOL.:tongue2:

I've had this happen a few times. If it is a small amount, a few dollars, I don't bother. Its going to waste more of my time and theirs than the amount is worth. Just like there are times when I get a defective product thats worth a few dollars and I don't bother to take it back. But if it was $100 or even say $25 I would take it back.

The most I have ever "kept" was once when I put a $5 bill in a change machine and it gave me $20 in quarters. The fact that the nearby snack machines (by the same company) had cheated me probably a dozen times in the past and I never tried to get my money back played into this decision, although I'm sure I was not cheated out of $15. When the snack machines have a product that doesn't drop, I don't bother to claim the money. And when I get two products for the price of one because somebody else's did not drop previously, I consider that my right since sometimes I got zero instead of one.

how noble!

unfort, I doubt I would return the money.  In fact, I'd probably get myself a nice sack with the "rebate."

You don't think it would be noticed?

Now, personally, I find that very amusing. :smirk:

Because I know it would. :rofl2:

What you do not realize is that $100 is always $100. It will be noticed. Its a sizable discrepancy. There are individuals held accountable for that discrepancy. Don't think otherwise, it is not a reasonable perspective; it belies the nature of reality.

yes, its reasonable to assume whoever is short $100 in their drawer at the end of the day will be out of a job, although wal-mart won't be wounded from it.

This believe it or not, is not beyond my ability to comprehend.  In the scheme of things, and we are talking about Walmart, $100 IMO is not a 'sizable discrepancy'.

You don't think so? $100 might not be enough in itself but its a question of trends. And if they did have to fire a cashier due to discrepancies, it does effect the store as a whole, and costs the store more money. The hiring process, loss of ability to most effectively facilliate the customer's consumerism... discrepancies are discrepancies.

You misconceive "Wal*Mart" as being a uniform entity. Well, you're wrong, and this is why you do not feel that an unaccounted for $100 is a concern regarding Wal*Mart as a whole. Within the scheme of things, as far as Wal*Mart itself is concerned, it is a cause for concern, and I think you fail to understand this.

Profit is profit, and the more a store effectively secures profit, the more money the store produces for the company - the bigger the bonuses for the associates and management, the more the customers are served as the store is not losing money, thus more capable of providing for the customer's needs by hiring more staff, which means more jobs for those who need them...

The thing is, in the scheme of Wal*Mart, the same line of thinking that, to Wal*Mart, a $100 isn't really a loss to Wal*Mart, implies that a $100 lost here is also a $100 lost there, especially in the regard that losing money implies that the store is less able to put that money into producing more sales, which means that an unaccounted for $100 means that the store loses more than just $100.

To think of a highly dynamic and complex system existing on a variety of levels, such as Wal*Mart, exists as a uniform identity, and that a missing $100 is simply an $100 addition to the $264,152,000,000 cost of sales for the year 2006, for example, is simply ignorant of the nature of the organization and how it operates. :smirk:

I would definitely take it back.  But how i brought it back would depend on a couple of things.  If it seemed an honest mistake and the clerk was trying to do a good job I would try to return it to that clerk and keep it quiet.

If it was some idiot or teenager too busy gossiping with girlfriends instead of doing their job I would probably go to the Head Cashier or manager.

When these situations happen I have always felt like it was some karmic test and I want to get an A!  :yesnod:

:sorry:

Guess I don't value knowledge of how Walmart operates as much as the next guy.  Don't really care.  Don't have much respect.  Could care less.  Call me a thief.  I said I would give it back now off my case.  Thanks for the Walmart 101 lesson though, that will come in handy.

Off your case? This is a discussion of ideas, and you presented the ideas for discussion. No one called you a thief. :smirk:

The knowledge regarding Wal*Mart is not proprietary to Wal*Mart. Understanding is understanding. The same principles in one system will be present within other systems, due to the nature of a system. Information is always beneficial to one's understanding of the nature of reality. Remember that chill pill?

It's gonna come out of his/her paycheck. WTF does the clerk's gender have to do with anything? Maybe it's a generational consideration. For $100 I don't want a kid to get fired or have to work extra hours to make up the amount. Then again, when I could've gotten someone arrested when I was 19 for about the same amount of money damage from a hit and run to my car, I opted to forget about it. The belligerent highway patrolman then smiled and shook the hand of this long-haired kid who'd rather eat $100 than put another kid behind bars. It's a matter of personal ethics.
