Law of Attraction
    #6780792 -

Okay, my boyfriend right now said he saw a movie/documentary thing that he wants to use to change his life. Something about Law of Attraction or something. I asked him to explain it to me, and basically he said it was about giving out good and you will receive good in return. Asking for an example, he mentioned this one lady with breast cancer actually fighting it off by repeating to herself everyday "I will be healthy" or "I am getting better" and she would consistently say such through the day. Apparently she did fight it off.

Now, the way he explained it to me I assumed he had never heard of anything like it. To me, a Wiccan, it is commonplace belief. To send out good/bad vibes you will receive good/bad vibes. It comes down to the philosophy of mind over matter. Belief in something so strong that it becomes real. You believe that you feel no pain strong enough, you will feel no pain.

Our brains are interesting machines which can be programmed, and (as the theory goes) with the right mindset and drive we can actually reprogram ourselves over time. If you want to be successful in your workplace you can repeat phrases to yourself day-in and day-out, and diligently strive to be better all the while, and eventually you will become a better employee through self-induced programming of the body (muscle memory) and mind.

I just find it interesting that this idea is shown in everyday parts of our lives that we would normally not think twice about. Choir songs. TV Commercials. Chanting in a crowd at a football game. Just saying "I love you" to your boi/girl. Even telling yourself over and over again "that's bullshit".

I'll leave it at that and let you hounds at it.

BB,
Free Ur Thoughts

This form of survivor testimony has very litle value. The ones that used affirmations, chanting and visualization that died are not around to tell of their failure.

There is no "Law of Attraction". It is pure New Age fluff. Do you honestly believe all victims of war, rape and violent crime 'attracted' that to themselves?

A proponent of this 'Law' was asked this very question and danced and danced and finally said basically, "Shit happens." That sums it up in both the positive and the negative.

The only 'real' part that is not quackery is treating friends, family and coworkers with respect and sensitivity. Nothing magical about having people glad to know and be around you.

The movie is called The Secret.

What i got out of the video was more that positive thoughts created more energy than negative thoughts and that you are better off thinking positive than thinking negative. I agree with this. But the way they present it in the movie is a little over the edge and exageratted.

Instead of being anti something you should be pro the oppisite. It allows for much more progressive energy and instead puts your focus on what you want achieved and not what you dont want achieved. The example they place in the movie is political campaigning. Instead of talking crap and putting your focus on the person you dont want to win, you might discover that instead putting your focus instead on who you want to win might actually deliver better results. For one reason think about the people receiving the message on the other end. Would you rather hear how crappy someone is for a job or would you rather hear how much better someone else might be?

I think the latter works a little more progressively.

That is basic psychology and not some form of mysticism.

Well it is a psychological process.
Named autosuggestion.
Nothing wrong with it.

I knew this incredibly weak rebuttal was coming.

The Law of Attraction cannot be demonstrated. Period. If you (or a more receptive person of your choice) was put in a sealed room; you would be unable to discern if a large group of people was sending you either 'good vibes' or 'bad vibes'. End of story.

Psychology, while admittedly an imperfect discipline, is based on observation and clearly works else marketing and advertising would have zero value.

Yah i agree psychology is a better way of putting it. Although the way they present it in the film might help people catch on to the aspect a little easier by adding the mysticism to it.

They present it in very commercial way.
Truth is there are no actual limits to it and one can improve it as much as he/she likes.

First of all i wasnt necessarily defending the documentary, but the seperation of logical "realness" and mysticism. Is religion just mass schizophrenia? I dont know and neither do you. Sure mystical experience may be defined in psychological terms, because it fits a certain description, but our definitions just fit in with the ultimate nature of reality, they dont actually define it.

"If you (or a more receptive person of your choice) was put in a sealed room; you would be unable to discern if a large group of people was sending you either 'good vibes' or 'bad vibes'. End of story."

On a side note, I totally disagree with this statement, although in sociological terms im pretty much insane.

Disagree all you want, but you will NOT go to www.randi.org and win the Millon Dollar Challenge. Please choose one of the standard 101 mystic's reasons why you will not do so.

First of all your assuming that i think i can control mystical phenomena.

Maybe i have a sense of dignity and respect for something i would venture as far as to call mystical.

So lets see, other reasons.

Because if i failed who knows where they would send me.

Because if i succeeded who knows what would happen to me, on gods or civilizations terms.

Why WOULD I? o yea, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

So heres something that would be alot more interesting to me. Why do you bother discussing this with someone like me?

You dont actually think your going to convince me right? And also you dont think that i will somehow convince you or teach you something by explaining to what a mystical experience is like, right?

we don't live in laboratories. on what grounds do they assume that mystical powers can be produced in a controlled setting free of chaotic variables?

it seems to me they're trying to walk through the front door by entering through the back.

So meditating in your house is different than in a hospital?

they're not interested in meditation. they're looking for spoon benders.

Well man, if you don't provide something tangible, all sorts of fanatics can argue their experience is the truth.

but not all experience is tangible, you see..

i know what you're saying though. if somebody claims to be able to bend spoons, then of course people are going to want to see the live performance with their own eyes. curiosity is human nature.

i'm merely putting extra emphasis on subjective experience and the power of belief.
