One can be a Gnostic and recognize the "Perennial Philosophy" which is shared by both Christians and Buddhists - NOT Christianity and Buddhism. True Christians and true Buddhists will recognize one another, while the multitudes who belong to each respective religion will deny one another because they do not have Gnosis, Truth, the Reality which Enlightens the true adherents of those faiths. Christians may meditate and chant, and Buddhists may pray and hope. These aspects of the spiritual life arise universally in different proportions in different traditions.

Meditation doesn't *equate* to Buddhism.

And while Jesus is looked upon as a Buddha by many(?) Buddhist practitioners, I don't think your friend is doing the other practices that would qualify him as one. :smile:

In fact, he sounds strong in his faith in Jesus, which for him, is probably an excellent thing.

There are many correlations between Christianity, Buddhism, and religion(TM) in general.  That even includes pagans depending on how well you know your world religions.  There are several books written by Buddhists who find that the similarities between B & C are extensive.  Not so sure about authors writing from the Christian perspective though.

One related thing: in Buddhism (in which I do not attest to know anything about, but am very interested in) it could be said that a major philosophy is that people and our experiences in general are more alike than different.  Even in one's enemies, etc.  See - there is shared concept right there.

I think your friend's faith as a Christian is says something positive (IMO) and again, I don't think he'll become an all out Buddhist...in this lifetime :wink:

Sometimes that's how people deal with their beliefs :smile:  I find it that his are perfectly fine, as long as he's not pushing it on anyone, no matter how awkward they are, I would respect it and smile about it in a manner of acceptance.

Did you hear about the Christian Science Monitor scare about 4 or 6 weeks ago? There was a chance that *fuck, i can't think what it was called -- something most people get vaccinated for)

It was a big deal because (I believe) CS practitioners do not believe in medication or vaccinations, relying instead on their faith in God.

Karma can be both a bitch and a blessing, no matter what religion you subscribe or don't subscribe to. A similar stance, like the poster's friend, or the CSs I mentioned, could be explained in both their successes with that strategy (relying on their faith to protect them), and failures by analyzing cause, effect, planting and ripining of mental imprints that they believe would be the true reason as to why they would get sick or better.

And if that isn't what you were looking for, best of luck in finding something. That is often suggested as the best thing. Find something you believe and go w/ it. But, for the love of God, think discriminatingly no matter the religion!

sometimes religion is like the encrustation of coral on a reef.
it becomes a concentrated locus of living beings and culture for generations - home to millions of tropical fish.
it can be beautiful to admire.
painful to skin your knees against.
it is dependent on coral
a tiny life form inspired to take a grip on rock with a good wash and sun.
religion is very often separated from the religious experience
and
the experience itself is personal inspiration.
when you become inspired you might wish to make a grip onto the rock where it happenned and form a shell for others to build on. or become part of someone elses thriving reef and forget about your own inspiration.

I think it's most fun to be inspired.

That doesn't strike me as Buddhist meditation, in the sense of being aware and accepting things as they are. That seems like more of an entranced/disassociated state. My two cents.

the thing is, ignorance is bliss, He's just in a state of meditation, he focus's his mind on jesus and the belief that jesus heals and does various other miracles, he's so convinced and mind set on it, that he believes it's not raining or that he is not sick.

now Jesus, when the storm scared his friends, he calmed the storm and the storm was silenced, and when he healed the cripple, he said "get up and walk." and the cripple was healed and walked, that would be a real miracle or a real christian.

but this man I met, he's more buddhist in his practices than he is christian in his practices, am I right?

No you are wrong, Buddhists do not consider ignorance to be bliss, quite the opposite.

The Buddhist attitude is to try and see things for how they really are, free from delusion. It is contrary to Buddhist practice to try and delude the mind in the way that you have described.
