The Guided Meditation Thread
    #4796101 -

I decided we should have a thread here to post any guided meditations you find useful. I'll start with a favorite of mine:

The Metta Bhavana: A Meditation for Developing Lovingkindness

Think of three people you know in your life
First, pick someone who is dearly beloved -- Someone with whom you feel a strong, loving connection
Then pick one who who is neutral to you -- A stranger whom you see regularly, but do not bother to notice most of the time
Now pick someone someone towards whom you feel hostile -- Someone who you may hold negative feelings toward

Now clear your mind
Be here in the moment
Picture yourself floating over your body, looking down on yourself
Think of all the wonderful qualities that you have
Realize that you are special, and deserving of love
Project feelings of loving-kindness onto yourself
Feel yourself being filled with this loving-kindness
Know that you are perfect in this moment

Now thank yourself for being such a wonderful person, and say farewell as you fade away into the background

Now, think of that first person
That person with whom you feel that special bond
Think about all the qualities you adore about this person
Realize how great it is to have this person in your life
Project your feelings of loving-kindness onto them
Let them know just how much they mean to you, and thank them for being in your life

Now say farewell to this person as they fade into the background as well

Now think of that second person
Someone whom you see on a regular basis, but never bothered to get to know them
Understand that they are a human being, just like you
With their own lives, their own relationships, their own stories to tell
See that inner essense in them which is inside all of us
Realize that they are beautiful inside, just like you
Project feelings of loving-kindness onto them
Wish them well on their life's journey
For you are both fellow travelers on its path

Now thank this person simply for the opportunity to coexist with them in your daily lives, and say farewell as they fade into the background.

Now think of that third person
Someone whom you don't particularly care for
Someone who may have wronged you, or whom you simply don't get along with
Understand that they may have many good qualities which you have not been able to see
See that they have their own life struggles too, just like you
Realize that holding onto anger does us no good, and release yourself of it
Wish them well on their life's journey, for they are not so unlike you
Project feelings of loving-kindness onto them
Let them know that you care about their existence too, and that you forgive them of any wrongdoing they may have caused

Now, picture all of these people gathered in one place
It can be a picnic, a temple, your room...any place you want
Express feelings of loving-kindness towards each and every one of them
Thank them for being in your life
Wish them all the best of luck in their lives

Now see them all becoming one
Realize that you all have the same essence -- the same Buddha nature
Understand that you are one with everyone you see throughout your day
Take time to appreciate the people in your life, whether they are a loved one, a stranger, or one with whom you feel hostilities
Know that they are all responsible for bringing you where you to are now
Thank them for being a part of your life, and recognize their inner light when you see them

That was a nice one. I learned a cool one on "oneness connecting" I might post here when I get a chance latter. Guided meditations rock, but the good ones, that have a powerful effect can take up to an hour.

Not many people have quiet free alone time anymore these days. Ihe ones who do I envy for being able to indulge in regular guided meditation of lengths of time. When you come out of a good one, you feel like mush and need more time to get back in a groove, but oh so much more relaxed, calm and confident to face the world when you do.

Some should come with, "Do not drive or use heavy equipment warnings" like with Valium.

I had to learn how to engage in meditative states while on the move within noisy distraction. he he

Meditation is very simple, yet hard to describe. To me, meditating is pure "being", pure "living, nothing more.

In true meditation, there shouldn't be any thoughts. Thinking must cease to exist, your mind must be emptied of everything it ever elaborated. If you are concentrated on the way you breathe or on anything else (such as a person you hate or a person you love), you aren't meditating. Your mind must be motionless, quiet, it shouldn't be looking to experience anything in particular

Meditation is total emptiness, complete silence. The mind ceases to be contaminated by society, it is not influenced by anything, it isn't pressed by any desire.

From this state of mind arises freedom, an ineffable freedom that transcends time, experience and knowldege.

Other "techniques" of meditation can help you reach this state of mind, because you will definitely not be able to do this the first time you try to meditate. But meditation isn't a technique. It just is.

Oh, i forgot to mention what techniques have helped me attain the meditative state of mind.

- Breathe slowly, and count each exhalation or inhalation you make. count up to 4 and start over: [breathe in (1), breathe out, breathe in (2), breathe out, breathe in (3)...]

or

-For each breathe you make, mentally pinpoint the beginning, the middle, and the end of your breathe.. this technique is excellent because you almost immediately notice if you are being sidetracked/if you start thinking about other stuff:
[breathe in (beginning, middle, end), breathe out (beginning, middle end...]

I completely disagree. This state of emptiness is but one of many states that can be achieved through meditation. Meditation is simply mental discipline, and it can be applied to any number of goals or states of mind.

paradigm,
exclusive's comment sounds like direct insight to me, while yours sounds very conceptual or logical, as if emptiness were a state that logically follows the idea of meditation.

exclusive's comment indicates that the work of meditating becomes fundamental, operative, instrumental.

states of mind vary, and can even be used as objects of meditation.

personally I don't think of emptiness as a state of mind at all.

state change of mind, is like levels of stonedness (enthogen), levels of absorption (meditative), levels of dreaming, or levels of emotional involvement.

the purpose of meditation is not state change but to work on the infrastructure of the associative process. learning to hold the attention, learning to be aware of how things follow on eachother, learning to sit still, & learning to choose direction. that is why the work has to become fundamental, operative, instrumental.

sometimes state of mind will change during meditation when the concentration is strong, but that is not the purpose.

BTW I like the metta meditation at the beginning, quite useful, and it shows directly the employment of associative thought to improve unconscious linkages.

THERE are seven keys to the great gate,
Being eight in one and one in eight.
First, let the body of thee be still,
Bound by the cerements of will,
Corpse-rigid; thus thou mayst abort
The fidget-babes that tease the thought.
Next, let the breath-rhythm be low,
Easy, regular, and slow;
So that thy being be in tune
With the great sea's Pacific swoon.
Third, let thy life be pure and calm,
Swayed softly as a windless palm.
Fourth, let the will-to-live be bound
To the one love of the profound.
Fifth, let the thought, divinely free
From sense, observe its entity.
Watch every thought that springs; enhance
Hour after hour thy vigilance!
Intense and keen, turned inward, miss
No atom of analysis!
Sixth, on one thought securely pinned
Still every whisper of the wind!
So like a flame straight and unstirred
Burn up thy being in one word!
Next, still that ecstasy, prolong
Thy meditation steep and strong,
Slaying even God, should He distract
Thy attention from the chosen act!
Last, all these things in one o'erpowered,
Time that the midnight blossom flowered!
The oneness is. Yet even in this,
My son, thou shall not do amiss
If thou restrain the expression, shoot
Thy glance to rapture's darkling root,
Discarding name, form, sight, and stress
Even of this high consciousness;
Pierce to the heart! I leave thee here:
Thou art the Master. I revere
Thy radiance that rolls afar,
O Brother of the Silver Star!

Here's another method I've found to take you to higher spiritual levels:

I havent tripped for about 2 months. I've been taking a break from my living dream of tripping weekly of about 2 years. That doesnt mean Im not going to any psychedelic events though.

I was at a psy-trance party last weekend, and my goal was to maintain a 'trancedental' mindstate so to speak without any intake of any substance. I kept thinking of Leary's 'how to operate your brain', and trying to tune my brain just right so I would achieve a higher cognitive state with just the right thought.

The DJ was spinning Hallucinogen's LSD, and I started dancing and then it just clicked: my body was in tune with the sound. I just kept on dancing on the waves of sound, I was on the same planar connection as I would be if I was tripping.

There are so many forms of meditation ... as long as your mind disassociates itself from its standard hectic busy state in a calm understanding, you've achieved your goal
