oh my god i seriously beleived the writings were real for the first 3-4 books but now im reading second ring of power(the5th i think) and its pure fuccin fiction. what gave it away is how in the previous books he just mentions pablitos(or whoevers) familly and theyre just an ordinary mother and 4 sisters, but later in the series when don juan and don genaro are gone, u could tell that he had 2 develop these insignificant characters into the main thing. and in real life la gorda wouldnt so specifically remember everything don juan told her. she was telling carlos all these things don juan told her, and instead of trying to beleive that she was remembering it all, i just pictured castaneda making the dialogue up as he went along. to those people who say they choose to beleive its true i was the same for the first 4 but u CANNOT try to tell me u dont get serious doubts when reading second ring of power (i actually beleive at least the first 3 were true u can see the difference)

you may be right but so far (1/2 way through) the second ring sounds way fake compared 2 the others

In the books, Don Juan uses loads of tricks to get Casteneda to think a bit more about himself and reality. That's exactly what Casteneda is doing to the reader. I always found Catsenada's character to be less intelligent in the books than one would expect. Don Juan often got exasperated with his repeated attempts to explain concepts to him. In this way, Casteneda is being the teacher, using the fictional Don Juan & slow pupil to be more accessable to people. The fact he made up everything Don Juan ever said and did, and in such an ingeniously instructive way, makes him more worthy of respect than if he had been simply 'telling the truth'.

There is a new book out, by someone trying to cash in on the Castaneda myth. The author claims the book was channeled by Castaneda's ghost or some such. The title is "I Was Carlos Castaneda".
