I find the poll results very disturbing not because it's irrational or stupid to believe in a "creator" (though I don't necessarily) but because likely most of those that voted for that believe in it in the Christian sense.

Now first of all, Christianity has to do with CHRIST, and the archetypal Christ figure is a stellar absolutely great way to model your life after.... HOWEVER maybe only 1% of "Christians" seem to realize that that is what their religion is about. The rest are just dogmatic political tools that don't really particularly believe anything and think salvation comes in the form of simply saying one prayer.

You don't buy salvation like that. Not even dropping tons of acid will necessarily do it for you, it has to be a constant life goal to progress to spiritual ripeness... to make yourself better... and I firmly believe that road has to largely be walked alone, that dogmas get in the way. This is why I like Taoism and Buddhism, they are guides to living but they don't tell you to straight up believe literally, they encourage thought THROUGH doubt leading to spirituality...... western society encourages blind obediance to authority figures that claim to be enlightened.

I'm not sure whether or not the big bang actually happened...... we are in "existence" right now, and therefore in our search to discover "nonexistence" (via fascination with the beginning/end) we are going to just keep looking smaller and smaller and smaller..... theoretically a huge explosion happened but to quantify it, to bear witness to it, bears that you do not exist in any feasible form as to be an eternal and omniscient/omnipresent being. If so, why is there only one being that has that luxury of consciously seeing and being everything?

Time pretty much makes the beginning/end of everything impossible for us humans to understand, so I think we should better worry ourselves with feeling in tune with the planet Earth and its fellow inhabitants, and find "God" THAT WAY, instead of trying to personify it in baffling terms that are better expressed through simple duality. (but i do not at all doubt evolution, etc, and i am all for scientific advances and discoveries, i just think people may misinterpret "the beginning" since time is entirely relative in the first place)

If that makes any sense. I'm kind of taking an agnostic approach to what little I know of Taoism, Buddhism, and Tibettan Buddhism and it's use of psychedelic drugs and lucid dreaming and such.

God is inside a flower. God is inside you. God is everywhere. But God is nothing. God is no being.

That doesn't really surprise me, and I don't think it matters. All that matters is the people who actually matter (leading intelligent scientists) know what to think. I wouldn't expect the normal person, or even the normal college student to think for himself.

In schools "facts" are taught as the unshakable truth. That is a form of dogma.

Neither of these options come from thinking for yourself. One dogma is taught in schools, the other one is taught in churches

Those that didn't vote are the ones that think for themselfs, because thinking for yourself detaches you from served "truths", and leaves you with an empty (but open) mind

How do you expect them to do it? Everything we know is just according to our current knowledge, so do we want the students to not know whether anything is true or not? This is science, not philosophy.

It's up to us to teach them, and then up to them to think deeper about the ideas later. We shouldn't teach them pseudoscience and myths simply because we need any alternative to logical scientific theories.

Evolution is taught, that is true, but mostly everything is taught. It took one genius mind (or a few) to actually come to the conclusion of evolution by thinking about it, and the whole point of the written word is to pass on information. We don't stop students from exploring evolution more, we just teach them the best scientific theories of the time.

One has evidence, the other doesn't. One is real biological theory held to be truth by the vast majority of modern-day leading biologists, the other is an old assumption made by primitive humans who didn't even know the earth was round. I know which one I'd rather look into as the truth.

Why not leave our minds open to every single piece of information then? We can never know anything absolutely, so why not just throw our hands up in the air and abandon all knowledge in favor of "open-mindedness"?

The atomic theory wasn't created by an empty mind, it was created by a mind that used knowledge and sought the answers from current information. The same applies to evolution.

you know very well that the chapter on evolution doesn't start like:

majority of modern scientists believe that...

its starts like: all life was created through evolution

I have nothing against teaching about all current scientific acomplishments, but I would prefer if students were taught to accept each of them with a grain of salt. Instead children are taught to accept whatever they hear in scientific magazines, or on TV, and specially in school.
The logic that is forming is: it must be true, we learned in school

People find tons of evidence of something, then they decide there is enough evidence and conclude it a make a theory. but that is not always the truth.

For example: Lets say a man was caught near a body of a dead woman, with a bloody knife in his hands, his past says he was in jail for murder before, and he had lots of fights with that woman, was heard by many people that he would like to kill her, some said that he even planed to do it this day that she died etc. etc.
Surely any man with common sense would say that he did it.
But all this does not really mean he did it, because nobody saw the act with their own eyes in front of them. It is not impossible that a huge amount of coincidences happened. Statistics and law of probability would say he did it. But do statistics and laws of probability say anything about reality?

Evidence can be interpreted in many ways, and unless you are there to see it, not you or anybody else will ever know if he killed her or not.

Same goes for evolution. Unless we find some unimaginable technology that will enable us to look into the past, we will never really know how life started.

speculation and theories about past are not testable, because you can only test them with same tools that made them: speculation and induction.

Since they are not testable, they are as credible as stories from bible or any other book

sure they are tons more PROBABLE than stories from religious books, but probability does not make anything more or less true.

I think our education system mistakes probability for truth

Religion should be taught in religious classes. Science should be taught in science classes.

This doesn't seem like a hard concept to understand. Intellegent design and creationism have no place in a biology class.
