food and death
    #4380140 - 07/07/05 04:36 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Let's say there are a few people in a desert or something.
You are one of them. Now while sitting here with a clear head (not influenced by an natural urge)
What do you think you should do acoarding to your beliefs?

eat your share of food and die if you don't find shelter and more food, or steal food from others and make sure your survive until you get to a settlement.
steal or take a chance?
You may choose only one
I'd steal and survive
I would not steal and gamble my life, possibly die

You forgot one option. I would kill the others and live high on the hog eating their flesh. In desert conditions a large quantity of flesh can be converted and stored as jerky. Then I would search for a settlement at my leisure.

I come first. If I was starving, first would be in capital letters.

Do you expect others to agree with you and let you steal their food? Since I did not specify any information about other people, what makes you more important to survive than them?

I am me, they are them. Barring any extenuating circumstances I will always be the most important person in any given group when starving to death is imminent.

Nobody would "let" me steal their food. Food would be taken by force, killing them if needed.

Hunger is a very powerful thing. Ignoring its reality in favor of making yourself feel like an upstanding person, even in a hypothetical, strikes me as crass.

That either one will survive or none. The reality of the situation you've described.

note: The brutal survivalist attitude would not kick in until all hope was exhausted.

There are ways to deal with such a situation.
Someone can sacrifise himself, or they can draw straws.
That way all can remain human beings, and the surviving one would live with the blessing of those on whos death he builed his further life.

Either that, or all can try to kill each other, die like a coward, and one would survive like a corward

How ignorantly condescending.

Human beings are not so noble as you like to pretend.

My point is that to suggest you would remain loyal to your virtuous ideals in face of starvation when definite survival is just over the horizon is foolish and, in my experience, would demonstrate a complete lack of understanding regarding hunger and an individuals feeling of entitlement to its own survival. Seeing as your scenario slates all persons concerned as equal in whatever relative "worth" that can be imagined it seems logical that your desire to live would surpass your desire to remain loyal to the ideals of civilization. Seeing as you're asking for a decision from a clear-headed perspective the first choice as previously mentioned, strikes me as crass.

Well I'm sure in any group there would be someone bitching about how they dont like walking and how they're hungry. Brunch usually tides me over for a while. Especially ribs.

I'm not saying I would remain loyal to that in such a situation.
This thread is about what we humans think what we should do in such a situation. It's about what we think NOW, when we are clearminded. What we would really do when being thrown to such an exptreme situation is irrelevant to this issue.

This is about the day after, when you get back to civilisation and reflect what you have done. The question is, do you see your action of canibalism as something that you should have done by all means without remorse, or is it something that was like an accident of your natural instincts and extreme situation.

The intention is what is important, it is the only thing that we can be blaimed for.

My ass.... In such a situation you would be shitting your diapers just like everyone else. That is human nature.
