criticizing beliefs =/= criticizing people with beliefs

The only bad attitude I'm seeing here is the anti-intellectual attitude which equates skeptical inquiry with bigotry.

i agree

to Ped: i've used this spirituality forum for about some 5 years now, and perhaps during the first year or so was mistaken into believing the forum could become a Weathermen Underground of Consciousness Expansion, lol, so I understand how you could vent (whether you see it or not, you really are) - but come on, now, guy - I watch over this site, and I think you've been singing this tune for too long now ----- consider giving firework's post another read.

Everything is better than it was the last time.  I'm good.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Every few months or so, someone requests a Koombayah Forum. I endorse such a place where the timid and weak could go to bask in warmth without friction. There only hugs and agreement will be allowed. Of course, no growth will take place, but as it is just a temporary safe haven - no problem.

However, debate, and the testing of ideas, IS a cornerstone of philosophy and will remain so.

It's true, as fireworks_god said, there are alot of posts about this subject. You know I'd like to think I'm able to roll with the punches when someone criticizes one of my posts, but I don't think anyone here is so mature, or emotionally calloused that they are completely immune to criticism.

I've visited OTD a few times to see what the fuss is all about. For the most part, it seems, OTD is just a "fight club forum" where everybody just bashes each other senseless. There's (almost) no rules, people just insult each other, no-holds-barred. The funny thing is, the people at OTD seem to handle that kind of abuse way better than some of the folks here at S&P handle criticism (I don't exclude myself in that line up either). I think the reason for this difference is that in the OTD, members are exchanging insults, whereas in S&P members are offering some of their own cherished ideas.

It's weird to think that we can actually be effected by something as silly as text on a screen, but the fact is, as I said before, we're all human beings and I don't believe any of us is impervious to the sting of criticism-- including the skeptics. Though they may try to present themselves as objectively minded, pragmatic individuals, I gauruntee that if you prick them they will bleed, tickle them and they will laugh, wrong them and they will retaliate with a vengence.

This brings me to my next point-- There seems to be a sentiment of frustration and bitterness among many skeptics/agnostics toward the idealists/theologens for all of the wrongs commited against humanity in the name of God(s). I believe it is this resentment that explains why they are often so agressive when makings their objections to a belief or ideology.

It is true that there are PLENTY of religious bigots out there, so I understand why some skeptics/agnostics feel the need to stamp-out idealism wherever they see it, but I think this kind of response is an over-reaction. Also, I don't want to generalize by saying that all skeptics are this way; I've seen many skeptics state their objections in a tempered, tactful manner, but there are many who are not satisfied with this moderate approach.

Although I identify as a "believer", I understand the concerns of the skeptics and I try hard to balance my thinking and consider their arguments. As much as I try to be objectively minded and accept criticism, I don't pretend to be anything more than a human being, and I will occasionally take things more seriously than I should. Ped, isn't that what the "middle path" is all about?
