if mental discipline is important to you, then meditation of some sort is necessary.

A newborn must learn to crawl, then walk, and finally run.

And after all that time spent, eventually ends up at The Scooter Store buying one of those powered chairs or gets a walker or is bed-ridden. Seems all that walking didn't really pay off in the end. Kind of a waste...

If a man spends 40 years walking, then why is learning to walk a waste? If he learned to walk just to make one step, it would still not be a waste.

Or are you unsatisfied with the way humans live and die? Well you are a human, and this short lifetime and walking is a part of you.
If you have a problem with it you are having problem with yourself as you are.

Doesnt this whole topic relate somehwhat to my Finding Ourselves - Buddhism post?

Becuase you have to understand what meditation is, before you can decide whether it is useful or not.

Im not going to repeat myself in this thread. those who are interested in what mediatation is and indeed how the inner workings of the mind function, read that post and indeed my other post on the Simple Meditation Technique.

I would think you only need sleep and "practice mentalling" to have "good mental discipline"....?

it is practice mentalling
nothing more
and certainly nothing less
if you see a need for it - you can gain huge benefit.
imagine a 10 yr old needing an eliptical trainer.
in the old days
older persons got into it and
people burned out by too much fun.
some inspired young ones took the opportunity for a head start.
of course there were some young shamans who had to - no choice at all.

is meditation any more necessary than doing anything else off the List of Stuff You Could Be Doing? I only have so many hours in my day to devote to non-vital functions.

That is kind of like asking "Is exercise really necessary to lead a full and productive life?"

Well no. Exercise isnt necessary, but it is beneficial. Just like meditation. There is no substitute for exercise for conditioning the body. Meditation is exercise for the mind.

People who exercise will have much better physical health than those who do not exercise.

Its the same with meditation. Meditation conditions the mind instead of the body.

Is it necessary....no......is it beneficial... YES

Meditation (observation of the mind) is nessasery for discovering and ridding oneself of the causes of suffering within the mind.

Also, to get a little crude, during sex if I feel like I'm about to climax all I have to do is focus on my third eye until I feel it being tugged (the sensation I get when my mind is totally clear), relax down my back to the base of my spine and I can delay as long as I want.

I do the same thing, but with a slight difference... substitute 'third leg' for 'third eye.'

I see meditation as a form of exercise for one's consciousness. Sure, it's not necessary, but it helps.

What meditation are you all refering too? There are many, but just remaining present and observing ones mind, is beneficial for all. We should all know how our minds function.

If we are ignorant of that, then how indeed do we understand ourselves? How do we express ourselves honestly to others, if we dont know honestly who we are? We cant!

for the same reason
that you need to practice playing guitar
before you can simply pick it up
at any time and go at it.
