Wow, I didn't know the military kills people!

Seriously now, if he enjoys his job, then hopefully that helps him get it done better. The military is trained to murder (in a good way).

*blinks*

Somehow, if a foreign army invaded your city/town and killed people you knew, I doubt you'd be saying the military is trained to murder in a good way. Granted, perhaps you don't like the people surrounding you, so that point might be moot.

Yes, they're trained to murder, but in a war that's supposed to be about "liberation" and where there are already Muslims angry at the United States for killing people within their civilization, I don't think it's too bright to make a statement about how fun it is to kill Muslims. The goal of the military isn?t supposed to be murdering people for fun, regardless if that?s exactly the mentality they have. I can only imagine what would happen if someone like Bush or Powell made a statement about wanting to invade Iraq to kill people for fun.  :smirk:

he's a general so he's probably never even shot anyone, unless of course it was execution style, which wouldn't surprise me. After all..they have "no manhood left anymore" so why not just execute them.

Our government and military is infested with simple minded hicks. Oh well...at least this general (this man is a general omg wtf) wasn't voted on by my countrymen. So i only half ashamed and embarrassed about him.

No surprise here. I'm sure there's lots of guys in the armed services who joined just so they can kill people. I mean, where else can one not only legally shoot and kill people but can do so with the approval of society?

That's not to say that the Army/Marines etc., are mostly filled with people like this though. I imagine most of them are just regular people like you or I....

This has nothing to do with anything related to the thread. If you want to debate the morality of a standing army, then go to philosophy forum. I would have thought most here would acknowledge that an army is a needed device, and as such, is used to kill people. That's reality.

The army is there to obey orders and kill when they must. If you put a bullet in a gun and pull the trigger, don't get mad at the hammer for firing.

I can only imagine what would happen if someone like Bush or Powell made a statement about wanting to invade Iraq to kill people for fun.

You really botched up the generals words haven't you. It is posted in quotes at the top of the thread and you've gotten it really wrong so far. He never said he likes killing muslims, he never said he wanted to invade iraq to kill people for fun.

The general likes to fight, he likes WAR, and guess what his job is?

He is a trained killer! He is not making decisions to go to war or not.

What's the problem?

Nothing to do with anything related to the thread? What do you thinks going on? Don't these people live in societies together? It's not only related to the thread, it's the same fucking thing as the subject of the thread. Saying it's "reality" doesn't mean that it's a positive thing. An army is a needed device, yes, but the whole point is that in a political world, the armies are supposed to protect nations from each other as a defense. I don't think 15,000+ dead innocent civilians is a needed device. More importantly to how this statement is negative is that it?s going to make the US military sound really awful to the world, especially people who are being occupied.

looner2 said:

So then something like the Wounded Knee Massarce, where the US Calvary slaughtered mothers & childern of a Lokota tribe, is justified simply because it was done by an army? Certainly if we are talking about self-defense, or if it's necessary, but the problem here isn't the fact that the military kills, it's that people are dying while a Marine General makes a public statement that it's fun to shoot some people. Obviously I'm not getting mad at the hammer for firing, what I am saying is that the person behind the hammer is often killing innocent people and then making a statement that it's fun. Not everyone the current military in Iraq/Afghanistan is innocent, but many, many are.

I'm really not taking this too seriously because I realize the guy is somewhat ignorant and moronic, it's just a really awful statement considering everything that's going on.

looner2 said:
He never said he likes killing muslims......

""You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for 5 years because they didn't wear a veil..... So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them.""

That's not referring to Muslims? Sure, he didn't explicitly say that in literal terms, but there is no possible way to deny that he isn't talking about Muslim people.

looner2 said:

The sentence ended with the smiley ":smirk:", I was being sarcastic when I said that.

You?re missing the whole entire point I'm making and filling in statements I didn't make. I never said armies aren't necessary, I never said that they're not supposed to kill, but you keep mentioning it as if I did.

looner2 said:
What's the problem?

The problem is that the people in Iraq & Afghanistan, as well as the whole world, are watching a guy making a statement like this when the whole war has been a public disaster. The world saw Abu Ghrab last year, and it?s obvious that it has harmed the US military?s image immensely. People are going to be much less sympathetic to the United States occupation if they hear Generals making statements like this. I?m not outraged that there are people like this in the military, even if it is a little disturbing, I?m saying that what this guy is saying is going to cause a lot of problems.

The other problem is that the military is publicly defending this guy & attempting to say that he meant to say the exact opposite of what he said. It should be clear to anyone that the other General, Gen. Michael Hagee is flat out lying. He even went as far as to say that this guy was ?one of this country's bravest and most experienced military leaders.? Once again, why this is important is because I?m sure Muslim people are going to take offense to the first statement, and only be more outraged that the military is backing up what he said. I can?t see how this is not relevant to the thread or what?s going on in the world right now.

Let's go over this one more time. I am not saying that armies aren't necessary, I'm not saying that deaths in war are the fault of the soldiers, it's that this is going to affect international diplomacy as well as making the US military image look really bad, and in some ways, rightfully so.

We live in a fucked up society if people honestly think its OK to kill people. How arogant are these people, they are all racists. This war has nothing to do with self defence. The american's are the attackers, they are the murders, no better then Saddam. And no matter how much the PR campains try to make it look like a worthwhile war, the world isn't going to believe it. Now thats reality

Murder is murder. Maybe this general will learn someday how FUN it is to be on the other side.

Thats my opinion on the war, if you don't agree then don't even bother reposting my post, and arguing agains't each point. Because my opinion on murder is not going to change.

That is a bold statement. Are you asserting that you know that every service member is racist? That is kind of presumptuous don't you think?

I didn't state that every service member was racist. People who enjoy killing others because they're muslims/arab.. now thats racist.

I know he didn't specifically say muslims, but anyone with a brain knows what kind of people hes talking about.

This is from a book that I started reading yesterday.

"In addition to being generally nasty to outsiders, genes have a supplementary tendency which could be described as Rule Number Two: BE NICE TO INSIDERS."

"They have no vision and cannot be expected to have the welfare of the whole species at heart. Which is why universal love does not EXIST or make evolutionary sense."

When did people start practicing eugenics again?

Seriously, that is a very flawed justification for okaying this General's statements.

The Theory of Evolution only demonstrates why a genetic or social trait has helped the survival of a race/species. To say that it's justified to make a public statement that it is fun to kill people because it's an evolutionary trait is completely backwards thinking.

By that very same logic, the men that this general is talking about have an evolutionary advantage by beating women for disobedience since it helped a society establish pre-determined roles for survival.

The second large flaw with this thinking is that this is merely talking about the history of human evolution and integrating it into modern societies. It is nearly outdated for social survival in current times. Yes, at times when it's a matter of survival & protection, it is justified. If you hadn't notice, however, we no longer live in tribal societies which require this type of evolutionary trait. Human beings at one point lived in a constant threat of outside tribes/states invading & killing those within their tribe/state. I have never had to kill "an outsider" for evolutionary survival and if I had done so, I don't think this type of justification would work well in court.

The author's entire interpretation of this evolutionary genetic advantage is also entirely subjective. A person could also make the point that since societies no longer function in the same ways it once did, this type of aggression & mentality is not only evolutionary outdated, it is actually a threat to current evolutionary function.

Yet another large flaw is that evolution isn't strictly genetic. Evolution can be a conscious, rational trait as well. The choices that people make affect the determined genetic traits needed for survival. Thus, if a government establishes a law against murder, it is no longer a genetic advantage to carry out murdering others for their possessions.

Yes, there is a reason why this artifact of evolutionary traits still survives today, but to justify the statement using the Theory of Evolution is really irrational. I can not picture telling the people who are being occupied that what the general said is justified due to the Theory of Evolution.

Buddy, you are totaly going off topic. I am not talking about evolution. I am not even talking about his statement. I am talking about that people will kill other people for whatever reason. It's all natural man. Stop trying to be perfect humanity, human nature will survive even if you don't like parts of it.

Oh and by the way, the book doesn't talk about evolution over millions of years. It talks about real time situations in animals and humans. I've had this discussion with one of you people already and you talked about the same crap. It doesn't matter if we live in tribes or not, we will still murder, pillage, and murder some more. Relax, shit man. Like I said, "It's all natural, man."

Dude, you talked about genetic traits for an advantage for survival, that's evolution. You made a statement about people who will kill other people for whatever reason, which is what the subject of what the General said is about. You just made statements and then said you weren't talking about the statements you made.

I'm not "trying to be perfect humanity", I was making a statement about what you said and discussing the topic. I'm not taking this seriously either as I'm well aware that whatever I say isn't going to change anything (especially from the ridiculousness of what people are saying). But if you're going to post in a thread, expect people to respond on what you said, which is the way discussions work.

Dude, the book that I am reading does not look at genetic traits through evolution. It looks at them in real time and how they make people do certain acts. I guess you will have to read the book to understand what I am talking about.

(FWI, I am replying to this after my last post because it was added on after I had post)

I'm not going to bother getting into a discussion over this because it is fairly simple. If a person is talking about genetics & evolution, it is impossible not to be talking about evolution over billions of years. That's the entire point of evolution.

Also, using the idea that something is natural so it's ok is really illogical. Don't get me wrong, I understand that this is something which has been going on for a long time and in the long run was necessary at times, but using the statement that something is "natural" doesn't really make much sense when discussing current events. You can't simply dismiss what other people are saying by reducing everything to it being "natural".

...... I just don't know what else to say. Looking at genetic traits in real time would be completely irrevelant without looking at genetic traits through evolution. The two are interdependant on each other. Real time genes are the result of billions of years of evolution, and ignoring that would completely ignoring why they are what they are now.

OK, somethings you just allow to be tacit knowledge. It's not very nice to go around saying such things. The fact still remains, that some two legged animals are deserving of getting their card punched outt'a this realm.
There are a FEW of us, in the Military that have the stones to pull a trigger, and send habib to allah. About 1/15 of those whom wear the uniform, EVER have the will to kill. This ratio goes clear back to the revolution.
I'm NOT going to ask ANYONE to like it. This is why people IN the service DON'T want to see a draft. There is NO gain filling the ranks with folk's who can't/won't do the work. In short, please feel my respect to those of you that have no aptitude for this line of work. Please though, allow us to kill the enemies of this nation, without your hand wringing. This doesn't mean, we'd rather kill most of them, than see them stop killing us. It would though, seem proper that those whom have killed our fellows see a return in kind.
It IS rather bothersome, to listen to SOME of you, attempt to assign the rights of a US citizen to killers in "git'mo" they have NO rights, and those that are found to be guilty (98%) of illegal acts, will exit gitmo via firing squad. Again, its not your chore, nor should it be.
If this would do you any good "dealing" with these truths, please look back, as far as the Revolution, if you care, and see the "fate" of the American fighting man in captivity, you will see a DISTURBING pattern, to include several nations that claimed Geneva convention status.
And lastly, to the good friend with the "Yank" comment!! yeah, that's right!! BIG, UGLY, AMERICAN COWBOYS HAVE TO SAVE YOU FROM THE HUNS EVERY 40yrs. You folk's are just about due, so I'd be nice to us, but that's just me!!!!! oh, most of us have MUCH in common, I just work for the,"MAN" consider me one of THOUSANDS of friends on the "inside." I DO AGREE, HE WAS STUPID FOR SAYING THAT.!!!
