Minerals and Additives for substrates
    #366978 - 08/04/01 10:58 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

Its been a couple years since I've grown 'shrooms. So I'd like to catch up on the latest minerals and additives you folks are using in substrates these days. Please note, I'm not asking about which grain or compost recipes you favor, just what your adding to it. For example; following the writings of C.B. Gold and others, I always add dextrose, glycine, gypsum(CaSO4), chalk(CACO3), kelp and use mineral water. This has produced an notable change in not only the potency of the 'shroom, but also the 'clarity' of it's effects. What are you folks using to enhance your substrates?

i've been adding a couple heaping tablespoons of flax seed meal to brf cakes. i'm not sure about the science behind it, but... it seems to speed up colonization to some extent, i'm not sure if it produces any noticable differences in the trip :P

my 2c.

The gypsum and chalk are added to adjust the pH to proper levels. Dextrose is a simple sugar that is used as a easily utilizable carbon source to speed growth. Glycine is a amino acid that is pribibly added as a nitrogen source. Kelp has a ton of essential vitamins/minerals that are needed for healthy growth.
This sounds like a great recipe to me. I would definately try using it.

One thing that I would not add is a vitamin supplement that has a lot of copper in it. Copper is not good for microorganism/fungi.
