I think if you look at it objectively, it's quite different than it used to be.
Most of it is the size - more users means more posts means meaningful conversations last less time because everyone is after the quick hit post.
But part of it is this - all the "Off Topic" forums we have. Everything that would be in Off Topic Discussion is somewhere else now... Spirituality, Political Discussion, Technology, Media, etc. So all OTD can possibly be is the leftovers. And with The Pub around, it's not even the good leftovers.

trolling the forum is not the way to get the peace and love that you want... if you want insults, pranks and general mischief then OTD is the right place, you're post was done to get a desired response, you recieved it and it wasnt butterflies and flowers like you claim you were seeking...

if you are looking for the opposite of OTD then try looking into another forum, try doing it without dragging the OTD drama into it, if you want people to treat you with respect try showing them that you have earned it, start holding your ground on statements that you make and quit denying that you made them after the fact and then going back to delete them when people point out or make fun of it.

the part that I find most suprising is that most of these people arent serious about it any of it... they are simply probing to see what buttons they can push

On a serious note though: I feel that Lightningfractal  rises some good points about how people should or shouldn't interact with each other online.

You(actually... We) all need to think next time before you are going to post anything, how this is going to be perceived by others. Words, even on screen, can have a  very negative  effect.

Garunteed a goodly amount of OTD posters could use lessons in civility.

But having a thicker skin isn't all that bad of an idea either.

So in order to make OTD stable, we should require a credit card registration for all OTD users and the public display of name and address with the forum...I like this idea, it should make OTD somewhat civil again. :wink:
