Sure, you could change all that, but why piss in someone else's cereal? The people who want to be immature and disrespectful have a forum in which to do it (which benefits the rest of the website which doesn't have to tolerate such behavior as a result), and the people who might be offended by what occurs in the forum have a disclaimer that lets them know beforehand of what lies ahead.

Everyone would be satisfied with this if the people who cannot handle the offensive content were to heed the warning in the disclaimer.

As far as the poll goes, many people in OTD are just going to answer whatever the hell they feel like selecting. :grin:

I think that one distinction amongst our forum as compared to others is that this is a psychadelic community, which means we have a high volume of reasonably intelligent, open-minded, noncomformist crazies that realize that others will act as they will and that imposing severe restrictions on their ability to express themselves is not productive.

I mean, we become more specific on the framework for discussion in other forums, as other forums are aligned for a specific purpose or intention. Offensive statements and insults will serve as a detriment in these forums, and providing a forum in which offensive material and such behavior is permitted with no framework will release pressure from these forums regarding this behavior.

I think that, being a drug-orientated website, we have a fundamental realization that prohibition will not work. As we are also discussion orientated, we thus tend to apply this notion to discussion. We will conduct and direct discussion in most forums, in order to better facillitate the exchange of ideas in accordance with the purpose and intent of these forums. A forum in which there is no requirements as far as topic and manner of discussion is concerned is a service to our members.

I think that we try to provide something for everyone who, for whatever reason, is brought to the world of psychadelics. We have a wide variety of individuals here and its sometimes quite the balancing act. I think a lot of websites include an "anything goes" forum, we just might be a little less restrictive, due to the culture from which we have been produced. :wink:

Why is everybody so mysteriously uncomfortable with the idea that there are a sizable number of true racists in OTD?

The only true racists that I've seen on this website have all been ostracized, like that one guy in PA&L, or that one black racist way back in S&P, and apparently some in OTD (tien or something?).

I can see it now, the news articles about how mushrooms cause people to become racist, citing this website as reference. :grin:

Well that was a breath of fresh air, but I don't think OTD is holier than the average population, which already is pretty racist.
I don't think everybody is joking in there, and I see OTD has a bad influence on at least some people.

It should not spill out to other forums, if you're all about freedom, people should have the right to choose for either experience.

Speaking from experience, as someone who openly admits to being non-white, I have never experienced any racism I would take at face value. In fact, I've never been called anything derogatory based on my race.

Granted, I don't spend much time in the OTD forum, and in addition, I'm not black.

I'm not sure where I stand on this issue. To be sure, it is naive to think that there are no real racists in the OTD forum. But to say that everyone who uses a racial slur intends offense would also be incorrect.

I feel that if racism is used with intent to offend someone, it should be regarded as a flame and treated as such. I don't think there's any need for undue attention called to racist statements.

I contribute so very little with so many words. I apologize in advance for this post. It's quite lame, I'm aware.

People have the choice, they can read the disclaimer and choose not to enter the forum.

As for OTD being a bad influence on some people, that's a problem for the influenced to address, not the forum.

People are responsible for their own actions and blaming outside influences is just a cop out.

Everything in this thread about racism could be applied to Homophobia which is rife in OTD, yet Hyper_Panda_go and Basilidies have no issues with OTD or posting there, neither do the rest of the fags.

Wow, a lot of reading in this thread... I skimmed most of the posts, but may have missed a few comments here and there.

I can't speak for the other admin, as we have not discussed this yet. However, we have had lengthy conversations about OTD in the past. Based upon those conversations, I suspect that nothing will be changed. Unless there is a really good reason, I will not support any action in favor of censorship within the OTD forum.

1) We split the pub off from OTD so that people that are offended by the lack of censorship in OTD have someplace to talk off topic without the garbage. People that find OTD too offensive, or racist, or whatever, can always make the Pub, with it's nice soft rounded corners, their new home.

2) OTD is an opt-in forum. Nobody is required to visit OTD for any reason.

3) The few times we have had real, vocal, racists join our community, they didn't last long.

4) Most of the "racist" stuff I see in OTD is done in the spirit of humor, or boasting. (I'm not making an excuse, personally, I don't like it... but I don't try to force my morals on OTD.) Seldom have I seen racist comments made out of spite or hate. In these few cases, I would support moderator censorship.

There is a very interesting trend, at least in the past. The people most against censorship of anykind at all in OTD are from the Americas (for the most part) while the people that want at least some censorship are from Europe (for the most part). I make no judgements, just an interesting observation. I suspect it is based upon our upbringing... the Americas have always had almost complete freedom of speach, while many countries in Europe do not... (can't deny the holocaust, etc)
