I usually did a top layer at spawning. PE does like a casing and with coir a late application usually is fine tho sometimes it will switch back to eating mode and take longer to pin.

The tub is already in fruiting. As long as you haven’t taped any holes it is good to go from the outset.

I didn't add a layer at spawn. And there is no casing now. I have leftover CVG I could re-sterilize and add a late casing layer if that seems like the best step here. I did this so last minute once I saw the tub build that I didn't put too much thought into it other than getting the S2B and into the tub.

It does work awesome!

I wouldn’t bother to resterilize, coir is pretty contam resistant. Unless you suspect grains or wood or debris in it however sterilizing wouldn’t help that much either to be honest.

If you want to add some I say just go and do it.

Nothing, I use the ez dial hole configuration on all tubs, from 4,5L to 65L. Only differens is dialing them in.

4,5L and 15L




Well you might want to consider how high you want the holes on the long side, I have mine about 5cm above where the substrate surface will be.

I'm actually rethinking since I do have gnat problems. Saw some in my space, gonna put fresh traps but I don't want to invite them.

Gonna do fully unmodified and see how it goes, I had made a thread a while ago I forgot, and cronicr had mentioned that these Dollarama tubs he always just does them unmodified.

Well, the tub is awesome! I cased this last Thursday and today I've got one pin but also seems like a lot of blobs coming. Never grown PE so this is my first run in with the blobs. I assume wait and harvest and they can be dried and consumed? I've read a little about this being common on the first flush and then the second is usually good to go.

Just impressed with the ease of this set up!

Blobs are fine to eat however I’d clone that one that is coming up normal.

I thought I was an outlier with my (6L) shoeboxes, all the teks talk about using them unmodded, and I have numerous holes EZ Dial style in various states of taped/untaped on all of mine. :headbang:

It just works, and I have shoeboxes with passive FAE, but they are good for keeping plates in so I never use them for fruiting :muppet:

Current blob status. One good size fruit (white circle) that has some white on the cap and one smaller emerging fruit (red circle). The rest are blobs, not covering the entire cake. Any thoughts when to harvest the blobs and fruits and move to flush #2?

Harvest blobs when they get soft. Give em a gentle squeeze and if they feel like a marshmallow they are ready. If they are firm they need more time.

The second flush happens regardless, all you need to do is juat maintain the conditions it already has.

Awesome. I truly appreciate your feedback and this tek. I'm still in awe over how well it's working. I have some ingeli and pan cyan ready to go...I was gonna build a an automated diffuser tub (computer fan on controller, air stones in heated water) but I'm thinking this might be worth the try while the weather is warm!

Blobs are real hard. So got some time. Also, the white on the large fruit is actually bluing as are some of the blobs.

First time running an ez dial tub. Wanted to experiment as I had a couple extra quarts of spawn so I ran an unmodified (bod’s) tub alongside. Unfortunately only had coir for the unmodified so it’s not a true 1:1 comparison. Sorry for messy distribution, was in a rush. 

Avg 75F and RH 45%

After 48 hours:

EZ dial:
(Also note two of the holes on long side needed micropore out of an abundance of caution after seeing a gnat downstairs in kitchen and they weren’t drilled flush. Rest of the holes were covered with insect mesh)
